It would add 200.000+ hotspots "on the spot", so noy only nice but also SMART!. And it shouldn't be TOO complicated, as I know there is a special "stripped" login feature in FON for mobile devices. What I mean is without needing to technically use the marked up login page. And yes, I am one of the 200.000+. Are you? ;)

Yes FON uses WISPR technology to make it easy to authenticate. They are everywhere worldwide; and at the moment very active in France (Neuf Wifi FON) and UK (BT FON) and Japan (Fon Livedoor, FON_FREE_INTERNET) but everybody can buy a fonera on amazon & host a fonspot very cheaply!

Devicescape offers an SDK to connect to these kind of hotspots on millions of locations

and do you have eye-fi as well?
wouldn't it be great if you could use it on the FON_part instead of only the myplace?
I've installed these "fon" spots everywhere in town & family... would be great !!!
currently I use Shozu/EasyWifi on my nokia

yea, i use eye-fi since a few weeks... in germany ,)

and now in usa is a pro card with raw upload available *grrr*

But it was a nice function to drive at holiday and can upload photos via a FON-spot (in the future ;)

so best regards

i've asked to fon ...
the problem is that we need web identification (thru a proxy?)

on eye-fi team side : don't think they want to loose money ... they make pay for an hotspot service. The question is, how much wayport earn on this and how much eye-fi earn on this and if it is truly insteresting for them ;-)
on fon team side : way to make it n1 : use a mac adress filtering rather than a web identification fo *.eye.fi.

but there is another way to make it interesting for both :
- eye-fi contact fon : find a money way to open *.eye.fi for all
- eye-fi make a payable option (cheaper than wayport hum ! the service is really different!)
- every body is happy !

@eye-fi team : i'm open to beta test this new option ! ;-)

captive portal https form authentication or xml wispr authentication
which is used by ALL hotspots... you can check it out on http://devicescape.com/learn/develop_program
only The Cloud uses MAC authentication in the UK...dunno if they still do though

you can indeed buy a 99$ eye-fi which entitles you to a 1 year subscription of At&T (wayport) hotspots...only in USA
19,99$/month subscription afterwards with a 1 year contract...
no boingo/weroam deals for instance to have access elsewhere worldwide

If Eye-Fi finds +- 500 (or more? :-) of their customers willing to buy a Fonera... they could get *.eye.fi whitelisted for everyone ...
This allready happened for Sony which sold La Fonera in their Sony Shops in Japan... 500 foneras is peanuts and got access for their Sony Mylo/Psp on 400.000 FONspots worldwide

they should indeed contact FON...
but they are probably only looking at USA market where FON is "small" (3000 fonspots)

that's why I find it strange they don't support Boingo... looks like At&T is also owner of Eye-FI? :-)

I don't use fon but I have a hotsplots hotspot run by DD-WRT here in Germany. I'd upload my photos ony to a ftp server at home but I think the whole internet feature is not made for me. I'd try to run hostap on my umpc.

yes i've never received any feedback from eye-fi as well in the last 3 years of their existence...
they seem to be targeted only to USA soil...
currently it's verizon vs at&t in the wifi market...
wayport bought by at&t let's see when verizon buys boingo
certainly with the upcoming new ipod touch (tablet pc?)
