Assigning a Static IP address requested

Postby agentus » Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:57 am

The Eye-Fi Card is designed to be used with a dynamic IP address which makes the Eye-Fi Card easily configurable with most wireless networks. Because of this, the Eye-Fi Card does not support static IP addresses yet.

Nevertheless some networks work with Static IP adrresses; so does my network (working with an ipcop).

For feature I request that Eye-Fi Cards will support assigning a Static IP address.

Best regards

I can see via Wireshark that the card communicates via MAC, but a static would be nice. My network usually have DHCP disabled, as it is unncessary traffic. Not to mention that when ad-hocing, a static is almost a requirment. Nobody wants to enable ICS or RRAS, nor do they want to start some third party app everytime they decide to ad-hoc. And, the waiting for DHCP to timeout gets really annoying.

You could even make the choice of static or DHCP part of the selected profile (see my related post about custom profiles per SSID).

Thing like these would make the Pro card actually "PRO-fessional", not just pro-sumer.

in an ad-hoc connection with no DHCP server present, the Eye-Fi card self assigns a private IP address (aka APIPA). Windows XP does indeed wait for a DHCP timeout interval before assigning itself a private IP address (Vista and Win7 have fixed this). ICS sidesteps this XP issue by serving DHCP addresses; assigning the Eye-Fi card a static IP address would not speed up the address assignment process on the Windows side.

Actually, It will speed it up...since I have APIPA disabled. It's the difference between waiting for the timeout and having an address immediately...not to mention I adhoc with static addresses with all devices that are adhoc. therefore, there is NO wait for getting ANY address. not to mention that my network (when I'm actually connected) doesn't use DHCP. The non-mobile devices are on a 10Gbe cluster and the boxes connects via fiber, to get the max bandwidth.

Yes, I DO need this much bandwidth...I move over 2TB of data per day over the boxes.
