Uploading Progress

Postby jlentz » Sun Nov 30, 2008 11:19 am

I would like a way to see the progress of pictures being uploaded at Wayports, etc.

I can't think of any way the camera could display that with the current generation of cameras but with the new Eye-Fi "ready cameras that would be nice to have. Since we don't have an auto-delete feature yet at least you could delete in confidence from your camera.

It's not real-time progress indication, but the text/email/Twitter notifications will (eventually) give you the go-ahead to delete in confidence.

I would love this feature - even for uploading to my home computer so that I know when I can turn my camera off!

Currently, notifications are triggered only after we have successfully delivered the photos to the specified website, so it is not an easy change unfortunately.

I do have it set to deliver a text at the start and at the finish, but the text comes maybe 5 mins. after it starts and well after transfer is finished, if at all.

easy... periodically write out all the status info to a .jpg file on the card, view it on the camera. camera would reload the jpg each time you view it and get new status.

This is far more difficult than it may seem at first (and believe me, I have prototyped it). Putting aside the complexities of writing a JPEG file that's actually compatible and decodable by all cameras out there (within the limited capabilities of an ultra-embedded system), most cameras cache their notion of what's stored in the media card and updates don't propagate to the screen (nor do directory structure changes). Most "natural" storage devices don't change their contents without the knowledge of the host system that's using them...

Berend:

You've confirmed my suspicion as to why there is no automatic delete feature. Are you able to safely flag photos as "uploaded" within your hidden Eye-Fi partition? If so, would it be possible to delete the photos on power-up, just before allowing the camera to mount/access the card's filesystem? This way, the next time the camera is powered on, any photos which were successfully uploaded before previously being powered off would no longer be on the card. The main issue I see here is how do most cameras handle the slight delay it would present when they attempt to mount the card's filesystem. Obviously, if this scheme were safe, I'm sure some people would want it to be an optional feature.

In the mean time, I'd be happy if the desktop software would just email or SMS me when photos are successfully uploaded to my local PC. I have one card set to upload to PhotoBucket+PC and it does, but my other card is set to only upload to the PC which doesn't trigger the notification.

putting a small led on the card to flash when uploading would be an improvement.

Though not handy when the card is located inside the battery compartment...

The only thing I could see as easily doable is to have a pop-up progress indicator on the computer screen (semi transparent box coming up just over the system tray)

It does this (although not semi-transparent) for individual photos during local transfer now. Are you saying one progress bar for the entire batch of photos, so you'd have a quick way to see if the camera is done with all pending uploads?

Either one would be nice...

The indicator type I was thinking about is one similar to the one in Adobe Acrobat when you are downloading a PDF file...

Maybe the file name and a progress bar that transparently overlays...

Though a batch transfer progress bar would be nice, I don't know if it would be possible without increasing the amount of info transferred (thus slowing down transfer even more).

My card is in a separate compartment from the batteries so I can open it (although not suppose to when the power is on).

Why does my EyeFi card no longer show the Upload Progress window when uploading to my local computer.
It used to work, but just stopped. The pictures upload, the folders are created by date, but there is no progress window to indicate
which pictures are in progress.
How do I correct this? Is there a corrupted pref file or something?
I really miss the progress window (thumbnail of picture being uploaded)

help
thank you

Just to be sure - you haven't changed the "Show thumbnail preview" setting in the tray icon right-click menu? Just make sure it's checked. If it is checked, and you're certain that photos are being delivered to your computer (not just to an online site), then I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the manager software.

Agree. This feature would take the guess work out of the photo uploading process and such. Please add.
