Upload to FTP Server

I would love it if I could have you send my photos to my FTP server rather than another photo service. Anybody else?

Can you send them via email to your ftp server? If so, I just posted a fix for mobile me email syncing. If you can change the email address in Mail to the one of your choice on your ftp server, it could work.

I would also like to see an FTP upload feature! The existing photo services may suit a lot of people, but FTP would solve my problem. As for services, how about PhotoShelter (especially now that a "Pro" card is available now)?

I'm with the others. This seems like a must for the "pro" card, as most news agencies don't want to send their images to a third-party service.

Let it be sftp or ftps. Unencrypted passwords is asking for problems. Or at least give those of us who care the option to use encryption.

I am trying to understand some of the specifics behind this request.

Is the request for the card to send content to a FTP server instead of a photo sharing site like Flickr? This would go through the Eye-Fi system (as it does on its way to any of the photo sharing sites).

Thanks,

^ that would be fine, as long as it's offloading to an FTP server

Yes, no problem that it goes through Eye-Fi so long as the images end up on our ftp server. Also, as I anticipate how my photogs would use the cards - leaving laptops in the car and using a MiFi or Cradlepoint Personal hotspot to communicate with Eye-Fi - I could also imagine a desire for an option NOT to upload to their laptops later.
The big pro desire for an Eye-Fi card, imo, is down-and-dirty shooting. There's something happening out in the community, and it's got to get to our editors and up on the website right now.
Any decent news organization supplies photogs with aircard-equipped laptops for field editing and uploading. But the feeling now is that this is neither fast enough nor convenient enough. Hence the interest in Eye-Fi, a personal hotspot and ftp support.

That would work for me too. Encrypted transfers (sftp/ftps) with an option for non-encrypted (plain ftp, for those who really like to share) from your servers to ours would make even more of us happy too.

I really want FTP uploads. I'd love to be able to use it to upload to my home server (a Drobo with DroboShare running an FTP server DroboApp) rather than uploading it directly to one of my computers.

Is that what missing it?

My post from 02.11.2009 (I do not know how to link, sorry):

"...I own a eye-fi PRO card and run a router (with LAN and WLAN) connected with my server (by QNAP) both always on and my PC.
When the Manager software is running on PC everything is fine and pictures will transfered to a path on my server.

Because always on router and local server normally I do not need PC to storage the images.
What I have to configure or does it not work without running Manager software? (But I can not guess...)..."

FTP support is here! :D

Due to popular demand, the FTP upload feature many of you have requested is now live. We have added FTP and FTPS support for photos (JPEG only) and videos. The new FTP option is listed alongside other online destinations and selecting it is as easy as choosing any other supported Online photo or video destination.

New FTP instructions have been posted on the support site.

Give it a go and share your thoughts.

I think it's great that you now have FTP service.. but only if it works. :D

I have been trying it for several hours.. and all I get is the message "Delivery Status: Error: Temporary problems with FTP server service. Please try uploading later" :(

Sounds like a problem on YOUR end.. as the photos have gotten to your server... although, I must admit, the instructions for setting things up are not all that clear.. so maybe I have a problem in my FTP settings.

Tom,

Please make sure that the path components you provided at the end of the FTP server URL your provided actually exist. For example, if you provide:

ftp://ftp.myserver.com/a/b/c

then the Eye-Fi server expects to find the directory path a/b/c relative to where the FTP server has the current working directory set to upon having logged in with the provided credentials. The Eye-Fi server will take care of creating additional directories beyond that level if you set up custom paths based on dates, but the fixed path must exist. If you need the Eye-Fi server to use a directory path starting with /, then use a double-slash when providing the URL:

ftp://ftp.myserver.com//a/b/c

The easiest way to test would be to login to your FTP server with a command-line FTP client and after logging in, issue the "cd" command to the path components that you provided:

cd a/b/c

In your specific case, I can confirm that the Eye-Fi server is not finding the path that you provided in the URL:

... | DSCN0667.JPG | FTPService::Upload | CWD "sites/pgaa/EyeFi" failed.

Good luck and let us know how it goes,

Berend

Do my photos have to go to your server before they come back to my FTP server? I just want to send these photos to my local server on a LAN w/o running back and forth across the internet.

OK, I have finally gotten it to work... turns out that the FTP site did NOT want it directed to my specific site ("sites/pgba/") .. just the general ftp://datazap.net followed immediately by the folder name (EyeFi) that I want the photos to go into. I guess by my login and password they figure out who I am, direct the upload to the right site/account .. and all goes well.

Thanks for the support help. Perhaps you need to add this to some sort of tutorial.. although I suspect each and every FTP site is a bit different.

Yes they go through the Eye-Fi server just like they do when the photos/videos go to any online destination like Flickr and Picasa.

Re: Upload to FTP Server [Relative path not working]

Postby peteheller » Tue Nov 24, 2009 1:08 am

I was able to set up my ftp account just fine and photos upload to the root directory. However I have been completely unsuccessful at adding a path to the ftp url. No matter what I do it is not retained by the Eye-Fi manager. I am entering it into the URL input box, hit save and when I check it only the root directory is stored and no files are being moved to the path where I want them. The structures I've tried are ftp://ftp.oheller.net/Photos/Eye-Fi and ftp://ftp.oheller.net//Photos/Eye-Fi. The directories are confirmed to be there on the server so that is not the issue. Why isn't the path being saved??

You need to just set the FTP location, then use the Advanced options to select the folder. So click on the Edit next to your FTP in the Manager and select "Show Advanced Options" then you can select custom text for the album name and enter in the path. Let me know if you need more help.
