Upload to virtual machine, no USB

Postby ptr727 » Tue Jun 15, 2010 12:09 am

Hi, I just got a new X2 Pro 8GB.

I want the eye-fi to upload the pics to my server running windows server 2008 r2 hyper-v.
The server is virtual, no hardware, no usb.
The server is a server, no user logged in.

I can install the software on my workstation and upload to my workstation.
I can install the software on my server, but I can't configure the card because there is no USB.
I can make the software run as a service.

It would be much easier if the eye-fi card can be configured to use CIFS/SMB or FTP, and would directly connect the server using supplied credentials, no extra software required.
But, from reading the forum I understand that even local FTP is not supported, i.e. the eye-fi card connects to the cloud, and the cloud connects to the FTP server.

I also just noticed that RAW to FTP is not supported, why?

How do I configure the card on one machine, but have it upload to a different machine where the software is running?

I have successfully set up my desktop to upload my pictures to a CIFS/SMB share on my ReadyNAS on my network via a mapped network drive letter, and it seems to work just fine with no issues. As long as the drive is able to properly reconnect on login, I'm all set to go. Of course, that means my desktop computer has to be on and logged in for the pictures to be received on my end, but that isn't usually a problem.
My cameras: Nikon D90, Panasonic ZS7

I cannot have a desktop computer be on all the time, wastes electricity, not practical.

I am looking for a solution where the eye-fi card will directly send pics to the server, over SMB/CIFS or FTP, without the server ever needing to configure the card, or the internet being available.
Seems so simple and logical, and what I expected, but I'm finding to be far from reality.

Hi there.

This is exactly what I want to do. Ideally this thing would upload to a CIFS share on our network. I can get around the non-support of WPA/WPA2-Enterprise by creating an ESSID just for this thing.

CIFS is not supported, that's fine it's a consumer product, but I would also like to create a VM to host the software that then shares out CIFS shares to the network. Seems reasonable , but it sounds like this might not work since it needs access to configure it?

Anyone have any new news on this one since this is an old post.

This is my current setup (upload to VM, which shares the pictures to the network), and it works just fine.
The "problem" is simply that you have to initialize the card on another computer with USB (or in my case a laptop with an SD slot), but once that's done you can switch to the other destination (the VM where Eye Fi center is also installed). You also have to use this computer to perform fw updates, but I don't find it a hassle.
