Direct Connect first day thoughts

Postby ajmast » Sun Apr 17, 2011 12:12 pm

Updated everything (had to use the delete/re enable account option to get firmware update), downloaded Android App And have played around for a bit with varying degrees of success.

I realize this is a just released product, so I offer up this in hopes it is constructive and helpful.

Set up: Connect x2 card 4gb
Moto Droid (original) running Android 2.3
Canon 1d MK IV.

First I set the card up to only transfer tagged photos. Camera does ~8fps so I dont want all those xmitting over to the Droid. Camera is set to never power off (sleep).

The Card (in camera) and the Android app intermittently see each other.
Usually force stopping the app and re launching it makes them communicate again, but not always.
Sometimes toggling WiFi makes it kick in.
Sometimes turning camera on and off does it.
When they do the transfer is pretty quick.

This is the number one problem at the moment. I have played around with the Direct Mode wait settings, and it does not seam to make a difference.

There should also be a real close/exit option, I don't need this thing running (and using battery) all the time. Let me exit and launch it when I need it (maybe a widget?)

I think their should be a Refresh option in the app to force it to to try and connect and retrieve.

Second when the Phone and Card are communicating, the phone will not Xmit anything over 3g. (This might be a Droid 1 hardware limitation) but I think the phone gives preference to WiFi and as such tries to send over the Card network, not 3g.

Interface;
The Share option on a photo once it has moved into the App should include the standard Android share options, not just the Eye-Fi network items.
For example I might want to share with DropBox, or my regular FTP client, gmail, etc...
As it is now I need to leave Eye-Fi and launch Gallery, find the photo and share from there.
I noticed you inserted a Share with Eye-fi in the gallery share, so come-on just let me do what I like with the photo once it is on my device (and save me some steps).

I also noticed a couple of times if I use the back sutton to back out, it will get stuck at the login screen, even though I have already logged in. (Force close with data wipe, then good to go.)

It is not a bad first attempt for what is a complicated process. But I don't believe it is ready for prime time just yet (which may very well be why you have not pushed the firmware en-mass).

DOESNT WORK AT ALL FOR ME!

I have wasted my whole weekend on this card.

I have 2 ipads (ipad 1 and 2) and iphone 4 with a canon g12 and canon 7d and cannot get this product to work

I purchased 4 different cards and NONE of them work as promised

I have upgraded the firmware on all the cards and the software on the computer

I have the eye fi 8gb pro x2, goe, connect x2, and mobile x2.

the mobile x2 did allow firmware update for direct mode....but the POS wont allow ANY device to connect to it....not even my laptop.

just keeps saying connection timed out.

you cant even rename the network or change the password on the card

the only card that works in the 5 different CF to SD adpaters I have is the geo (the oldest card)

none of the x2 cards work in the CF to SD adapters.

no ios software as well

why wont my card allow devices to connect to it.

UPDATE: my neighbor is having the exact same issue. this is ludicrous!!!

I just pugraded the Eye-Fi Desktop software from 3.2.4 to 3.3. For some reason, 3.2.4 is not on the website, but it was upgraded from what was originally in my Pro X2. For some reason, the upgrade failed and every time I tried to upgrade it to 3.3 it still stated as being 3.2.4. I had to unistall 3.2.4, download 3.3 and manually install before it really worked. I don't have an Iphone or an android device so I can't really test it. But I do plan to getting one soon. My questions are...
1. Does the card transfer the entire jpg file and the Ipad/android resize it or does it display the full size pic.
2. does it work with geotagged files, even if there is no internet acces??
3. Can you transmit the files to your PC/Mac/laptop after you've received them in your Ipad/Android??

It transfers images exactly as you took them (including raw if you have the pro card)
It does appear to geotag them based on your phone's reported location
You can set your phone up to transfer to your PC but that will only happen once you are on the same network (I have not personally tested that)

As for features, I agree it needs to have an 'on/off' switch. I have no need 99% of the time to have the app running, and its one of those apps that just won't die when told, it keeps coming back. That said, its too early to tell if it has any effect on battery consumption since it just came out yesterday.

Also it would be nice if you could specify a target directory for transfered images, and also specify what directories you want it to show in its gallery, as its currently showing a bunch of crap I don't care about, but to its defense the phone's gallery did that as well, until I configured it not too.

As a first pass though, so far so good for me. Not sure whats wrong with dthreatt but maybe settle down a bit and talk to support before you go all head case on the internet, its probably something small.
