Slow transfers from phone to computer

Postby awake1563 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 6:55 pm

Installation of android app on htc thunderbolt went well, firmware update to card was a little buggy, but worked after a couple attempts. The rest of setup wasn't bad, although it would be nice if there was more explanation as far as what the app does and is capable of doing, i'm relatively literate, and it took me a while to figure out where & how the pics were being transferred, when, and what I could and could not do to change it. A user guide/ info bubbles along the way would be nice.

problems:
- transfer to phone is steady, but not very fast... i'd say 15-20sec/photo, where as from my card to my laptop (macbook pro) it might take 2-3sec. (ad-hoc) The thunderbolt has .11n, so it seems like this should be much faster

-transfer from phone to computer is painfully slow, maybe 1-2min/ photo (~5mb files). i have the wifi only option selected, as well.

ideas:
Create an ad hoc phone to computer option of some sort, or (also) i think an option to upload photos to both the phone, and separately to the computer (when nearby), both directly from the card, would be great.

reimburse "pro" card buyers some $$ for their cards since all X2 cards are capable of ad hoc now... in my dreams ;)

Transfers from the phone to your computer are not the same as the Eye-Fi Card to your computer. Our Card discovers the computer on the network and transfers directly to it. The phone doesn't go direct but is relayed through our servers down to your computer via any connectivity path the phone has (3/4g, wifi, etc). This happens whether or not you are on the same network.

Are there any obvious reasons for this / plans to change it in the future? My understanding from browsing these forums is that it is the card that has some limitations due to its limited resources, so I find it astounding that it has features the android app doesn't.

Anyway, +1 for this feature request!

Any update on this issue? For some reason, I thought it had been resolved, but I'm on vacation out of the country and since using my phone to receive in the field, I was back at the hotel trying to backup the phone pics and camera to the laptop directly and I've realized that although they are on the same network, it is still taking forever (more so being out of the country). This is very unfortunate as in the future I'd like to just use my own hotspot to relay from phone to laptop without relying on Cloud access. Please make this a priority and let us know where this is on the list? Thanks

The app was update a while back to have direct to computer transfers. If it doesn't find a computer to send to it will relay them through our servers. To use the feature 'upload to computer' must be checked AND you must have set the desktop destination for the phone. So your Eye-Fi card would be paired to your phone then the phone is configured to send to your desktop.

Thanks for Replying Bruce. I verified that both 'Upload to computer' and desktop destination were checked and properly configured. Both devices were attached to the same WiFi network and the computer would notice start downloading the file, but only after the phone had uploaded it, indicating a transfer via the Cloud. Any reason it would not have noticed the computer on the same network (or somewhere in the logs I could check for those details)? Thanks

I forgot to mention one other thing, if you have set an online destination (such as Flickr, etc) then it will always go to our servers first. If you are just going to the desktop or desktop+View, it try to send direct. It takes time to find the destination so one or two photos may upload before it starts to send directly. Also, firewalls could prevent connection to our computer so just for testing, turn off security for testing.

Anyway, you can post a log or pm me if it isn't too long. You can use LogViewer and set to record once you are ready. For best results, first kill the app (go to system menu->applications->manage apps, find app and click, hit force stop. Start recording, start app, take a few pictures and wait. About 15 seconds or so it should detect and start uploading. Either that or you can share several photos and choose desktop as a destination only.

If you feel like looking in the log, the string EyeFiPeerLocator will show up. It should have something like:
EyeFiPeerLocator( 1279): Helper hint is: 192.168.2.106
then later if it finds your desktop:
EyeFiPeerLocator( 1279): Located authorized Eye-Fi Helper at 192.168.2.106

I just ran a quick test here at home without issue.

Cheers,
Bruce
