Downloading files via usb card reader.

Postby bernard on Fri Sep 26, 2008 10:13 am

Anyone know how to download your photos from the Eye-Fi card with the supplied usb card reader and keep all the geotagging info in order to use on flickr?

The thing is, I don't want to use the wifi uploading when I'm on vacation. And at the same time, I want to use the geotagging feature of the card.

I don't mind having to use the Eye-Fi manager to do that. I only need a way to do it without the need for a wireless router.

Not possible. The photos have to be handled by the Manager to get geotagging info. All that is collected with the photo is information about nearby Wifi access points - information that would be useless to Flickr or any other app. Currently only Skyhook has the database to turn that wifi info into a position, and that's why the Eye-Fi software has to manage the transfer. Eye-Fi has a contract with Skyhook to "translate" WPS into geolocation.

Well I knew about all that. But there should be a way to run the image through the manager to translate the WPS information to GPS coordinate. It's not really practical when your on vacation to not be able to download images from your SD card when it's full.

I shouldn't have to carry around with me an access point to do this. Because that's the only way I know of right now.

I just got an Eye-Fi Explore. I took a trip, and the auto uploading was painfully slow and I resorted to uploading with a usb card reader. Now that I am home, is there any way to get my geotagging info into my files? All the pics are still on my card. I currently have upload to computer and upload to web off.

Thanks.

If you turn one of the upload options on, and the card has never successfully uploaded the pictures by itself, it will try to upload them now. If they have the necessary Wifi positioning info with them, they will be geotagged when the manager uploads them.

That worked, but it imported each picture, one at a time, into iPhoto, creating an event for each--what a mess. I will post this part of the problem in another, more appropriate forum. Thanks for your help! Brian
