Latency on Eye-Fi Servers ?

Postby bobbywise on Sat Jun 04, 2011 5:44 pm

Hi,

I just got the Eye-Fi Pro x2.

When setting it up, I initially enabled the Eye-Fi View, and also transfers to my computer.

I have disabled both uploading items to Eye-Fi View and transfers to my computer.
I have only enabled online sharing to Flickr with Selective Share mode (so it should only transfer photos when I protect them).

However, each time I take a photo (without even protecting it) my Canon 550D will transfer it, and the Eye-Fi Center updates with the images. Initially it was updating with both Raw and JPEG, but now only JPEG.

Is this normal behavior (maybe it's because Relayed Transfer is auto enabled because I have online sharing), but I would think in my current situation that the 550D should only transfer if I protect an image (i.e. choose to upload it).

P.S. even when sharing online initially via protect I never had the issue. It only happened once I enabled and then disabled upload to computer and Eye-Fi view.

P.P.S. is it always transferring to Eye-Fi Center because in the 550D Menu I have Eye-Fi Trans. set to enable (i.e. the camera setting overrides what the settings are in the Eye-Fi Center software) ? -- Again, I enabled this on the camera originally at the start, because when it was set to Disable (icon with OFF on it on the 550D screen) the transfers that I wanted to push to Flickr via protect would not work -- I had to enable.

Please advise.

For me this is not really an issue when I am at home, but a big issue for me when I am using my phone as a tethered wireless router with my camera -- this functionality will eat my 500 MB monthly allowance on my phone if it keeps transferring when I have not configured it to.

Hi again,

Further to my original post, I've more testing.
When I disable online sharing and disable Relayed Transfers, the auto transfer stops each time I take a photo.

When I enable online sharing, Relayed Transfers is obviously enabled (this is the current design), and unfortunately the images are auto transferred even if I don't choose to upload them via protecting them.

I would have hoped that the auto-transfer would only occur if I enable Upload items to Eye-Fi view, but it auto transfers even when this is disabled.

I think it would be better if the product allows us to define whether or not this auto-transfer occurs. Many people have limited bandwidth with their mobile Internet subscriptions, and the current design of the auto-transfers (not configurable) is something that should be changed.
