Connecting Eye-Fi To Wireless Network With Username+Password

Postby jasonsc on Mon Feb 13, 2012 9:41 am

Is it possible to connect an Eye-Fi card to a wireless network that requires a username and a password to connect to rather than just a general password (i.e. a school/work network)? When I attempt to connect to such a network I am only getting a single textbox to add the password, but not one for the username. Any help would be appreciated.

To connect your Eye-Fi card to ANY network, it is my understanding, you must first "select" the network you want to connect to. The very process of selecting the network signal will automatically select the name of the network for you. Thus, all you have to do is enter the correct password for that network and you're connected. For example, let's imagine you're at Starbucks and you go under your wireless menu and you see an available wireless signal labeled as "Starbucks Free Network". You then select that network to connect to. The name Starbucks Free Networks is the already the name of the network, and is already selected, so you don't have to enter it. All you have to enter is the correct password and you're good to go...

That's right, if the network only requires a regular wi-fi security password it can be added, but a username/password combination means you have a different layer of security to deal with.

jasonsc, as you've seen, it's not possible to provide that kind of information using the Eye-Fi card's standard method of adding a private network.

Check http://easywifi.com and if your network participates, you can hopefully connect the card to it using our Public Hotspots feature, which allows you to connect to Easy WiFi supported networks.

If this isn't an option, see if you can have the MAC address of the card approved by your IT department so you can skip the username/password authentication. To find the MAC: http://support.eye.fi/cards/how/how-do- ... c-address/

I hope this helps.

This must be just a question of tweaking the software, or am I wrong in this? It is a real problem for me, because I move around university campuses a lot, and the wireless network available at most academic institutions, eduroam, requires username and password authentication. I would be extremely grateful if this could be implemented!

I imagine the issue is that every single wi-fi network using username+password authentication might do it in a completely different way. I doubt it's possible for the Eye-Fi card's limited system to be programmed to negotiate through those. We added Easy WiFi integration to X2 cards in part to help connecting to networks like these.

If you have a laptop, smartphone, or tablet that can run our software, you could just use Direct Mode and send your files straight to that device, and then to any online destinations you use. In environments where you don't necessarily know the exact location of the nearest access point, I would always recommend using Direct Mode instead.
