Geotagging used to work, but had stopped

Postby conductor » Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:49 pm

When my Eye-Fi card was new everything worked great, even in Europe. Most of my photos had a Geotag and these tags were quite correct. I announced my home network to Skyhook and since then it became even better.
Suddenly the Geotagging stopped and I never got it to work again. None of my more recent photos has a Geotag, not even those I had taken at home. What can I do?

Conductor,

few questions for you...

which Eye-Fi Card do you have?
How long was geotagging working? and how long ago did it stop working?
Is it only photos that you take at home that are not geotagged?

Jeremiah,

I am using a Eye-Fi Geo 2GB. I bought it in May and it worked great. Somewhen while the summer it stopped Geotagging. Now, and that is strangest to me, on November 17 I updated to the Eye-Fi Center and the first photos were geotagged again after I wrote this posting. But the next day it had stopped again and it doesn't geotag any photos any more until now. Is there any logical explanation for this behaviour?

conductor,

couple questions for you

1. How are you verifying that the photos are not geotagged?
2. Are any of the photos getting geotagged?
3. For the locations that were previously getting geotagged, do photos in those locations still get geotagged? (Best example would be your home)

Thanks,

Jeremiah

Hi Jeremiah

1. How are you verifying that the photos are not geotagged?

a.) Eye-Fi imports my photos in iPhoto. But there is no data about where the photo was taken.
b.) Looking at the details of the original photo in Finder there is no GPS-data.
c.) Looking at the information about the photos in the Eye-Fi-Center it says "This photo is not geotagged.

2. Are any of the photos getting geotagged?

As I said in my last posting, after having updated to Eye-Fi-Center there were 26 photos suddenly geotagged. You are invited to look into my account - I think you have the possibility to do so. Look at the photos of November 18th. There is for 26 photos the sign of being geotagged, nothing before and nothing after. But all were taken at my home - like the next photos in my account until now. And that should answer your third question.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong and hope very much that you can help me!

Thank you,

Conductor

I am having the exact same problem. I have an Eye Fi Pro that's been doing a great job of geotagging images for over a year and about a week ago it just stopped. Everything else works fine. It uploads images to my computer and my Flickr account, but both the JPG files on my computer and the ones uploaded to Flickr have no GPS data included. I even used Eye Fi Center to disable and then re-enable geotagging hoping that might fix it, but no dice. This is super frustrating, and literally started happening for no reason. This is the main reason I use this memory card and I really want the feature back. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi PeelTrident,

it's nice to meet you. Welcome with your problem. I like knowing that I am not just silly, that there are others with the same problem like me.
I just don't know if we get ever an answer by Jeremiah or anyone other of eye-fi, you can see that I am still waiting since my last answer on all his questions...

If you find out something new about our problem, please let me know. Thank you,

Peel and Conductor,

what cameras are you using?
Were you using the same camera in the past?
did you change your wireless routers or access points?

Thanks,

Jeremiah

Hello Jinjorge,

since I have the Eye-Fi Card I'm always using a Canon Ixus 110IS and always the same router at home. Nothing changed.

Thank you for caring,

Same problem here.

Geotagging seems to have just stopped working reliably.

Most of the time my photos are not geotagged, even at the house under my own wireless router as stated by others.

I am using a Sony NEX5
An Eye-Fi Pro X2
And even updated to latest firmware v4.2172

I confirm the missing gps data as other users have before me....
no gps data in exif inspector (preview)
eye-fi control center says photo is not geotagged.

Camera hasn't changed. Router hasn't changed. Router password hasn't changed.

Our servers show your photos getting geo-tagged generally in the great state of Texas. Is that correct?

Just to isolate the issue a bit, could you login to Eye-Fi Web Center and see what geo-tagging information is displayed for the photos that you've stored in Eye-Fi View?

Thanks,

Same thing, canon 880 does not pull geotags anymore. I read a post that recommended leaving the camera on extra long, that didn't do it. Now I have the inconvenience of uploading photos to my CPU wirelessly and takes forever to get zero geotags when I could've uploaded them in 20 seconds manually and still have no geotags. Loki finds me to the mailbox and still Eye-fi does not geotag when I'm sitting in the same place Loki says I am at looking at my laptop when I take a picture of my dog laying there. This product was awesome when I worked now it does not and is not awesome... anymore.

i don't know if there's already a fix to this problem, but i'm experiencing the same thing since a couple of months.

i own a eye-fi geo 2gb sd card which i bought a couple of years back and always used it with my canon eos 450d camera. geotagging used to work fine but lately it just stopped. the eye-fi center is reporting that the pictures don't have a geo tag and so is iPhoto.
I've tried to disable and reenable geotagging on my card and reconnected it with my computer, but no luck so far.

Hi iceman,

sorry for you, and welcome to the club...
No, I don't think there is an official fix until now. Is there a photo in your eye-fi account that had a problem uploading? E.g. the connection to the server broke down while uploading? My observation until now is: If there is a photo stacked in the upload-download queue between your card, the eye-fi server and your computer, then all the following pictures are marked as not Geo-tagged.
Try to delete the photo in question and after a few days waiting, your pix will restart being Geo-tagged.
Please keep me informed, if it works this way - maybe we can solve this problem for the producer of eye-fi cards...

Best wishes and good luck,

I too have lost the ability to geotag my photos. I have three cards, all are geotag enabled and all worked well until about two months ago. After conducting a lengthy exchange with customer support about this problem, I was finally told that they have found a problem with changes made by Google in their location services (the provider for Eye-Fi used to be Skyhook, but they have changed to Google). These changes have resulted geotagging not working for "some" (I don't know what percentage) of their customers.

I was told that their engineers are in communication with Google engineers to try to come up with a solution.

From Eye-Fi support:

"The issue as you noted is not directly related to what is in the Google geodata database but is related to changes in how Google returns data via its geo APIs.

The Eye-Fi engineering team as well as the Eye-Fi product development teams are currently working with our geodata partner, Google to improve the results provided from their database. Unfortunately, the methods they use to return location data to us have recently changed and as a result some users like yourself are reporting that geodata that used to be provided are no longer being returned and therefore not added to user photos."

I was also told that they are unable to provide me with a projected timeframe for resolution. Based on this response (received August 18) from Eye-Fi, I don't think you will be able to find a solution on your own, but will need to wait for Eye-Fi and Google to fix the problem with a software update.

Hi jpatm,

that's very interesting what you are telling, but in my opinion there are different problems at the same time...
My card, for exemple, stopped working while Skyhook was still used and restarted suddenly to work correctly in January...

At the moment everything is okay for me, all my pix are Geotagged correctly. So there must be another problem besides the Google one, and I suppose it has to do with an accidental stop of transmission and having a photo pending being uploaded.

Conductor,

Thanks for you response. How do you identify a photo that is stuck in transmission? And once you find it, how do you delete it?

thats the problem i am having right now. i tried to delete the last photos that were geotagged and a few after that. geotagging is still not working on my eye-fi card - so i suppose those i deleted weren't the ones causing the problems.

First is easy - there is a photo missing on my computer. Just check your sequential photo numbers and you can identify the missing one.

Deleting is another problem. I don't remember very clearly what I did, I just played around, deleting in my Eye-Fi-Center everything around the missing photo. But maybe there was help too by an Ey-Fi'er reading this thread, who did something in my account... ???
Suddenly after half a year without, Geotagging worked again and does it until now!

I got this reply from Eye-fy support:
----
Thank you for contacting Eye-Fi Customer Care.

The Eye-Fi engineering team as well as the Eye-Fi product development teams are currently working with our geodata partner, Google to improve the results provided from their database. Unfortunately, the methods they use to return location data to us have recently changed and as a result some users like yourself are reporting that geodata that used to be provided are no longer being returned and therefore not added to user photos.

Unfortunately Google does not provide a manual method for users to add a "verified" access point other than via an Android device. If you have access to an an Android device I would suggest that you follow the directions in http://support.eye.fi/support-resources ... r-my-home/ .

While this method will not provide immediate help, it should over time allow your card to geotag your photos at home once Google updates and verifies your current access point. In the meantime, all I can do is ask for your patience as we work with Google to improve the methods they use so that they return data that you and other user have become accustomed to receiving.
