Hi dichro,

Tried it on my Galaxy S, running DXJG4. I got it configured with my card and can see that it dowloaded pics. But it only displays the date and time of the pics and when I tap on them nothing happens. Accidentally titlted my device and it went to landscape mode, then the app FC's. I can get it to FC only if I tap a pic then switch to landscape mode. Also, where are the pics saved? I tried searching using Astro but couldn't find them.

Would like to say thanks for the effort so far! :)

Sorry for the delay in replying, for some reason I didn't get a thread update notification from the forum :(

The received pictures should be in your gallery, the same place that pictures that you take with the phone's camera go, just in a separate folder. I'll try out the force-close scenario that you describe this weekend - sorry about that!

(To explain the mysterious non-functionality of that screen, it's intended to access the transfer log so that you can see how long uploads take or if there's any problems, but it currently doesn't do anything other than show you the most recent update time from the card for every image. I might make tapping on the picture take you to the gallery directly, though, if I can work out how to do that.)

How is there no Android app after this long? I was thinking it would be easier to do the Shuttersnitch thing that everyone is doing with their ipads but all we have is Leshak's app, which doesn't work and doesn't look maintained and this one that Dichro just uploaded.

Dichro, your app looks promising but is not working for me in my limited tests so far. Are there step by step directions somewhere that I'm missing?

Eye-fi people, you need to help this guy get tethered shooting on Androids going full force. With the deluge of cheap android tablets that are coming out soon, this should be a no-brainer.

Dichro,

Can't get your app to work on Droid 1 on a rooted Froyo and Wi-Fi tether. I have an Eye-Fi pro X2. It finds the card and shows a list of the pics but I can't find the pictures anywhere; not in the gallery or with Astro file browser. Any ideas?

For anyone else who is trying this, you have to turn off "relayed transfers" and all of the features that tun it on automatically. Took me a long time to notice that this was on even after I had turned off all of the online services.

HTGamingPC and I have been working on the problem, and it turns out to be that his card - and maybe all X2 cards? - uses the filesignature field differently in the upload transaction. I've just pushed v1.4 of Fe-Fi to the Android market which should work with cards that display either behaviour (and if there's any docs that anyone can point me to that would confirm how this field should be interpreted, that'd be fantastic too).

* Do the features and functionality of the iPhone app address what you are requesting for Android?
* Leshak's app requires the Eye-Fi Card and the phone to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Is that scenario likely for your use?

Thanks,

I would like the features in the iPhone app. I took some pictures with my Droid today and now have to go though the hassle of pulling them out of my camera. I would rather not mess with it. I would rather they just appeared on my ftp server the way my eye-fi pictures do.

Thanks!

In terms of features:

Ability to connect directly to wi-fi tethering on the phone (no hotspot or routers required) - this already works for me.
Have photos upload onto phone immediately and quickly, with notifications and popup to view/manage photo.
Ability to share with one-click to facebook, picasa, sms, email, etc.
Have this software delivered soon, since a lot of eye-fi cards were sold over Christmas, along with many android phones.

Craig,

I'm working on my own version of this for Android as well. What photo management features would be helpful? I planned to support the one-click sharing like you mention, as well as geotagging photos with the phone GPS.

still no news?

I received an Archos 101 internet tablet today and couldn't get Fe-Fi to talk with my X2 Pro card... Just keeps scanning but nothing happens...
This should be a kick-ass combination it we could get this to work...

They're defnitely working on an android app since they even showed the app working on android devices at this years CES. What i'm thinking though is that they'll release the android app when they've finalized the new features which were showcased at CES, and they did say it will be this year, though they didn't specify when this year. I'm hoping the release is really soon because i'll be going on a trip to Vancouver BC in late march and it would be totally awesome if the update was out then. fingers crossed!

Hi,
Just having got my X2 card I was curious as to how it did the uploads etc.

My Android Galaxy S phone comes with a Wi-Fi teather built in, no need to root it that allows the phone to act as a router to direct all wifi traffic out to the 3G network.

It also has sync settings that allow it to sync to Picasa web albums.

So without any specific Android apps on my phone I am able to take pictures on my Canon Camera, use the Wi-Fi AP on my phone and upload them to Picasa and then view them on the phone with the built in Galery App.

Admittedly it is not as immediate as the Direct mode demo but definately possible.

My point is that ALL the photos I take are uploaded in their native format from the Eye-Fi card directly to an Eye-Fi cloud server and then resized and sent to Picasa.

The next time I turn on my PC and launch the Eye-Fi center software it connects to the Eye-Fi Cloud server and downloads the originals to my PC.

So the Android App needs to be a Man-In-The-Middle and grab the photos before going to the Eye-Fi cloud so that it is not attempting to upload and download the images via 3G thus eating up your data plan.

Hi,

I just posted a new app called MoPhotos, that may be what you are looking for.

http://www.mophotosapp.com

I wanted to be able to transfer pics from my Canon XSi to my phone, and immediately share on Facebook. We built this app to make it easy and intuitive to copy photos to your Android phone/tablet, and then view/share them.

Hi Kevin,

I've tried to use your support email but it was returned as non-deliverable, so I'll just post the question here, hoping you'll monitor this and be able to reply.

I see, from the FAQ in your homepage, that this app of yours requires the Eye-Fi card and the Android device to be on the same wireless network.

Alternatively, for carrier services permitting tethering devices via wi-fi (device acting as an hotspot), to the Android based connection point, it is also possible to use this function.

However, the device I intended to use your app with (an European Samsung Galaxy Tab) only allows for either 3G/HDSPA usage or wi-fi usage at each given time, rending the second option inviable, in my case.

Is it possible (and do you intend to) further develop your app to allow for ad-hoc connections of the Eye-Fi to the Android devices?

Hi EK,

I will look into the email bounce...I believe I had that account setup to receive emails. Thanks for letting me know that.

I'm not too familiar with the European model of the Galaxy tab. I will have to do some research. My testing of the app was split between having the Eye-Fi tethered to my phone, and using an isolated access point to which both my phone and Eye-Fi card were connected to.

My code does not really know if the connection is through an ad-hoc connection. Obviously, my code has no control over the Eye-Fi card's ability to connect to an ad-hoc access point. I can try to setup an ad-hoc tether connection and see if that works.

Thanks for your comments and feedback..

Hi Kevin!

Glad you caught this here and will be doing some experiments :)

The strange thing, to me, is how developers, such as Eye-fi and yourself seem to be so focused in the web/cloud upload functionality in this product when, what most photographers (both amateur and professionals alike) really need is the direct, ad-hoc transfer between the Eye-fi card and the device it is being transfered to. Check, for instance, this thread to see how many in it mention this:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=37260042

This last capability is crucial because, "in the field", there simply might not exist an Wi-Fi network to commonly link both devices to. Alternatively, data plan usage might be very well be a constraint even if a 3G network is available (...in my case, for instance, it is not a problem here, in Portugal, where I live, as I have an unlimited data plan but it immediately turns into a problem as soon as I cross the border, since the European Commission is taking forever to crack down hard on Service Providers for their outrageous roaming fees in Europe...)

Symptomatic of how Eye-Fi is tackling this the wrong way, see how the "ad-hoc" functionality is currently only offered in their "top-of-the-line" card, the ProX2.

In the case of the Android OS, any focus in the web/cloud immediate upload functionality and down-play of the direct transfer to the device capability is even more puzzling, because, for the web/cloud upload part of the equation, once the photos are already on board the destination device, there are already several Android applications that can be used.

I now see that Eye-Fi has made an announcement about this at CES, last January (...something that renders the reply I got for the question posed to their Customer Support about the subject even weirder...). They will (...soon. I hope...) come up with something called Direct Mode...I really hope it will aptly address this strangely down-played requirement.

All the best!

EK,

I did get the email address working...thanks again for letting me know about that.

I am more of a casual photographer, and so that's probably what the app naturally gravitates towards. I had some ideas of how to add some professional type features to my app, to better deal with how they would use it. Also, I did make things like uploading to the cloud and geotagging all optional, because I understand there are different needs and preferences (from a privacy perspective).

what most photographers (both amateur and professionals alike) really need is the direct, ad-hoc transfer between the Eye-fi card and the device it is being transfered to

I agree the direct transfer is a preferred way, especially with the slow upload speeds that most of us see.

I did find an ad-hoc tether app in the Android Market, and I'll try out my app in an ad-hoc wireless configuration, and see if I can get communications working between my app and the Eye-Fi card.

Hi,
For Information my first tests with this App on an Android GalaxyTab.
I have an Eye-Fi card 8Go X2 Pro ,a Panasonic Lumix G1 Camera, a GalaxyTab that i use in wifi mode only (no sim Card Inserted)
i have installed the Kevin application Mophotos on my GT. Via parameters pannel indicate where on your SD storage you want your photos upload.
I did install the "Android Wireless Tether" on GalaxyTab , you need to root the GT first , i used "Z4Root".
I start the wireless tether, This of course stop the current standard WiFi connection, (you need to get the name of SSID from Wireless Tether parameters Panel)
i add this new connection to Eye-fi card, via Eye-fi center (eye-fi card in adapter on PC)
I stop the Eye-fi Helper and Center on PC.
I Start the MoPhotos app on GT. Message appears "Mophotos Service has started" .
Put the eye-fi card in your camera and shot, first you will have a message telling you that eye-fi card is connected, and after an other message" Upload Started.. "
Tap Photos button, you will see the pictures.

Voila! Congratulations to Kevin for this App, He was always disponible and assist me, as i had problem with installation of Eye-Fi Center on PC.

If you need to upload thoses photos elsewhere , once you stop the WT, you can transfer those photos via HotSpot or Phone.
GT comme with tethering Possibility, i did not test it, as it need phone running. (sim card)

So, without rooting the Galaxy Tab (...something I don't want to do...) where do we stand about making "ad-hoc" photo transfers from the Eye-Fi to the SGT?

(I already got the ProX2)

I think the question is whether the carrier for your Galaxy Tab has enabled the WiFi hotspot functionality. For example, here in the States, Verizon's Galaxy Tab has the feature enabled. By having it enabled, and a working cell data connection, you can turn your Tab into a hotspot (router, access point, whatever you want to call it) for a regular WiFi network (not ad-hoc), allowing any Eye-Fi card to connect to it.

If your carrier doesn't provide this functionality, or you don't have a cell data plan, then you'll need to root and put something else on, which may only work with ad-hoc networking, and thus require an Eye-Fi Pro card to connect to the Galaxy Tab.

I live in Portugal and, here in Europe, we don't have the carrier-based restrictions you guys seem to have in the US. The SGTs over here are not limited in any way.
I tried Kevin's app and it didn't seem to work. I contacted him already, via email and am waiting on a reply.

How it went:

My Galaxy Tab allowed for the creation of a mobile access point (hot-spot), and so I did using an app called "Quick Settings".
I then made it "visible" to the card, through the activation of the hot-spot feature in "Eye-Fi Center".
Then, I installed and launched MoPhotos and selected where the photos were to be stored (SD card).
I also inserted the Eye-Fi key in MoPhotos, as required and as per their instructions.
Next, I took a shot with the card in the camera and, indeed, for a brief moment the notice "Eye-Fi card connected + (address)" appeared in the GT notification area. However, no photo ever shows up in the "My Photos" area. Transfers simply don't go through.

At The beginning i had the same problem.
With Kevin help,he found that installation of Eye-fi center was bizarre, about transfer Panel.
we use "AlogCat" application to log MoPhotos dialog (filter on "Mophoto")
So I uninstall eye-fi center and re-install it and i set the transfer panels to :selective transfer = Auto, relayed tranfer disable, illimited memory disable.
Now it works OK.

Second Test:
I just install a sim card in my GT.
Instead of using " Android wireless tether" , i set in GT Parameters : Mobile Acces Point. (this is allowed in France : Orange Network)
I add this connection via Eye-fi center , the connection was first refused, untill i connet my pc to this network.
I stop eye fi center , and start mophotos.
i remove the eye fi-card and install it in camera then i shot.
Mophotos did not recognise the card??
i remove it and put it again in the adapter, without starting eye-fi center, Mophotos recognise the eye-fi carf and upload photo to GT??
I re install the card in Camera and shot again, mophotos continue to upload pictures with the eye-fi card in camera.

Hope this help.

I also sent a AlogCat log to Kevin and he is trying to figure it out. He mentioned another customer with the similar problems and that's probably you :)

(...and the way Eye-Fi center works is, indeed, bizarre. Believe it or not the card kept sending photos to my computer, as per initially set-up, even after I had removed my home wireless network from the usable networks list...go figure!...It only stopped when I deselected "Upload photos to this computer" in the Eye-fi Card Settings "Photo" tab.)

No, not really, sorry... :(

This is all EXTREMELY confusing and certainly not a reliable way to repeatably and robustly do what I need from the card: On location direct transfers of photos from my 1DMIV to my Galaxy Tab, without the need for a 3rd party network.

I just don't take it against Eye-Fi because I knew I was buying the card for an usage that is, at the moment, out of its scope. To their credit, the card installed and worked like a breeze when initially set up the way they announce it to work, at the moment.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of Direct Mode for my card to finally fill its destiny :)
