Mobile uploads/Direct connect

Postby achin » Wed Apr 13, 2011 1:57 pm

I've purchased the Pro X2 about a week ago, because of it's RAW and Geotagging capabilities, but I'm a bit disappointed on how it works. I've read many of the problems posted here so I'm not going to rehash them again. I've not tested the RAW features yet, but I did try the video and the Geotagging with limited success. When I was testing it, I was in a rather dead/limited zone, so some of the pics did not have geotagging data. Geotagging is nice, but not necesary for me. My main reason for getting it is because of it's Wifi.

Other than config issues, I got a few questions regarding mobile uploads/Direct connect.
- With the new Direct connect and Ipad/Android Apps, does it also upload the geotagging data? What if there is no internet connection.
I don't have an Ipad, Iphone (Ipod Touch??) or Android tablet but plan on purchasing one in the near future, but most likely without the 3G feature.
- Once configured for direct connect, will my Eye-Fi Manager on my computer still be able to download the photos or is it a one shot deal.
i.e. once uploaded to the mobile device, it can't upload to a second device like my laptop.
My laptop is my main storage source, but I would like to view the photos on the larger screen of a tablet like the Ipad or Android Tablet after taking the photos.
I tend to do a few events shootings so moving around all over the place and it's hard to carry a laptop around.

As for Geotagging, I don't know how the Eye-fi card does it, but from what I understand, the card picks up the nearest cell wifi hotspots, get's their SSID or IP addresses and records them to a separate section on the card... with a link to the photo of course. Once connected to the Eye-fi Center/Manager, it send the photo along with the geotag data. The program then needs the internet to access the global database to cross-reference against the SSID/IP address so it can determine it's GPS location. It then modifies the EXIF file on the JPG with the GPS location. If that's the case, why can't the Eye-Fi Center/manager program record the original SSID/IP address on a separate file on the computer when there is no internet connection... So when there is an internet connection, the program can either automatically or manually synchronize the data file with the JPG. That would probably solve a lot of issues with people not having access to the internet on their ad-hoc systems.

The other issue is that you have to have a directly connected internet connection when using adhoc for geotagging to work. You just can't share the laptop's wifi connection for both adhoc and internet access... at least not that I know off or is extremely slow since it has to switch between services.

I'm also curious to the answer to these questions.
It is really disappointing that Geotag data can't be saved to the PC.
Furthermore, I hope a response from a team member of Eye-Fi will actually cause something to occur.
Per my previous experiences with customer support, I got a lot of good e-mails at first, but subsequent responses asking for updates were completely ignored.
Even after opening a new ticket, the new ticket was simply merged with the old one and ignored again. The issue I had was a huge one, and definitely warranted immediate work - LensID in the EXIF recorded was simply not being recorded correctly unless using relayed transfers.

I really hope something can be done about both issues. Otherwise, what's the point of having an Eye-Fi X2 pro if the main features correct data ( geotagging, lensId in EXIF ) don't work.

I just bought the Mobile X2 8G-WiFi card today from Best Buy. The box said it included the Direct Connect feature and EyeFi App of iOs but there was nothing there?

It's not shipping with the Direct Connect activated?

Odd that the package would say that. There is a new card coming out with that firmware included, but the card you bought will need a firmware update which at the time of this writing (Sunday morning the 17th), is still not available.

My mistake. Your card (X2 Mobile) should have included the Direct mode firmware.
