Eye-Fi Helper crashing on both my Macs

Postby CoffeeGeek » Tue May 10, 2011 8:28 pm

Starting in the last day or so, both of my macs (iMac i7, Macbook Air 11.3) have had the Eye-Fi helper crash soon after the program is launched. It is constant. The only thing I can tag it too is on my MBA I had to install the latest version of Adobe AIR today, and soon after that, Eye-Fi Helper would crash, rendering Eye-Fi Center useless.

I don't recall updating Adobe AIR on my desktop Mac in the last little while (week or longer). Both computers started having the constant crashes of Eye-Fi Helper today.

Very, very annoying because I just bought my second X2 Pro card today to use in a second camera. I can't even set the card up fully because it needs to constantly communicate with your servers while making all the settings stick, and with Eye-Fi Helper crashing constantly, it won't work.

Steps I've taken

Desktop:
rebooted computer
unlinked Lightroom 3 from grabbing the Eye-Fi uploaded photos (I'd set a "watch" directory in Lightroom, it grabs and moves photos; I've disabled that)

Macbook Air
Rebooted computer
Uninstalled, reinstalled Eye-Fi software

None of this works. I have the latest versions of the software, and managed to get in a firmware update on the new card just before the crashes started. My 2nd X2 card has the latest firmware.

I'd like to see a fast fix for this, please.

Hi Berend. I submitted about a dozen crash reports earlier, including a few with my email address (coffeekid at a popular mail site).

Thanks for the attention to this.

This problem is also happening on my MacBook Pro. Eye-Fi Helper was working just fine on May 10; After starting my machine this morning (May 11) I tried to upload a few new photos. The helper app started talking to the Eye-Fi card and the first photo began to upload; there was a pause in the upload process (based on the info in the small progress window), and that pause seemed to coincide with Time Machine starting up to do its periodic backup. After a few seconds the photo started to upload again, and then the Eye-Fi helper crashed. Now it crashes every time immediately after it starts. I'd guess there's a corrupted support file somewhere, but I've no idea of where to look (I'd try replacing it with a Time Machine version from back before the problem started happening if I had some clue as to what to replace!).

With all the crash reports that have been submitted by CoffeeGeek and me, surely there'll be a fix soon!

And me. I've submitted a dozen myself in the last hour. Can't figure a way past this and it's a big deal since not only can I not upload any photos via the eye-fi card, I can't even take a look at the card's configuration because the app crashes prior to seeing the card.

Come on support, something very strange obviously happened recently since as others have reported, everything was working for me an hour ago, and now totally shot.

I'm actually surprised that a situation like this can occur - assuming it's something to do with your servers, you'd think that we'd still be able to upload photos from our cards to our local computers via our own wifi network without crashing. Count me not impressed.

Is this problem currently persisting or was it transient (albeit for a few minutes to an hour) in nature? We're trying to pinpoint the exact cause.

Thanks for your patience,

For me the problem lasted about an hour, then as mysterious as it appeared, it disappeared.

Great! Please accept our apologies, then. This was a server-side reconfiguration/hiccup that should have been handled better in the Eye-Fi Helper, but wasn't. We've sorted things out on the server and will fix the delicate bit in the Eye-Fi Helper based on the crash reports we received.

Thanks again,

I'm having the same problem. Nothing new has been downloaded and no updates, suddenly, eyefi helper just crashes and does so repeatedly after I click the option to restart. This just started today for me. I've tried restarting my computer, but that doesn't help. For a brief moment, 2-3 seconds it started uploading again, but then just as suddenly it crashed.

I'm continually having the problem on my MacBook Pro - and the company seems not to be telling any of us what they're doing to fix it!

Catherine,

We have addressed the server-side issue that was causing the problems that various folks were reporting as I've posted on the forum. If you're still experiencing crashes, you may not be afflicted by the same transient problem. If that's the case, please open a support ticket and they'll forward the necessary information to engineering.

Thanks,

Thank you so much for the response, Berend - at this point my Eye-Fi helper seems to be stable.
