How to copy files wirelessly?

Postby bobgrosh on Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:28 pm

When I plug the Eye-Fi Connect X2 into the included Eye-Fi USB card reader, I can access the card as driveL: just fine and copy files from or to it.

However, When i plug the Eye-Fi Connect-X2 into a my wife's cheap Wall-mart camera, I don't get a drive L: to show up.

So, I can copy files when wired, but not wireless.

I thought that was the whole point of having wifi on the memory card.

I do have the Eye-Fi desktop app installed, and it does capture pictures taken on the wife's camera.

I can also copy files to the card when it is wired, and then plug the card into the photo frame and it will wirelessly transfer the files to the Eye-Fi Desktop application. But, it does not show up on the computer as drive L: or any other drive. There is no way to send pictures to the photo frame, so, the card is useless in the photo frame. To bad, because I really would have a use for several of the Eye-Fi cards if I could copy photos to the various photo frames.

I guess I wasn't paying attention when I bought the Eye-Fi card. Nowhere on the box does it say it is an SD card. Besides, with over a dozen XLR cameras and HD camcorders that use memory cards, I didn't think that it was possible for me to not have a single camera that has an SD slot. It turns out that only the wife's little point and shoot pocket camera and two of her photo frames have an SD slot. Her camera has such a POS lens that I would never let anyone see a picture taken with her camera.

So, I see this company has been around for five years. AND THEY STILL DON"T HAVE A CARD FOR A DECENT CAMERA?
Really, With something so innovative, and promising so much convenience, I would have thought that producing versions to support all the popular formats would been a top priority before the initial product introduction. I guess that after five years and still no cards to fit my cameras, I should not hold my breath.

Please tell me that there is some way to get the card to show up in explorer when it is not plugged into the USB port. With all the hype about how great the wireless card is, I can't believe it won't work over WiFi. I am running Windows 7 on a 6 core PC if that is any help. I tried rebooting. and re-installing the software. Even tried a second PC. Still no luck.

Since the only use I have for this, because it is not one of the formats I use, is in the photo frames, if that doesn't work, it will end up in the closet on the shelf next to some eight-inch Floppy disks, a ring mouse, An IBM Cross-pad, a zip drive, a hand held text scanner, a finger print reader and other useless products that seemed like a good idea at the time.

The card doesn't show up as a drive on your computer. The card connects to the Eye-Fi software on your computer and downloads the pictures from the card into the folder that you tell the software to save them to.

As far as "decent cameras"... the early models of Eye-Fi cards were 2GB SD cards... the later models and all of the current X2 models are either 4GB or 8GB SDHC cards. I would venture to guess that at least 80% of all current camera models on the market now accept SDHC memory cards, including many Digital SLR cameras used by professionals.
My cameras: Nikon D90, Panasonic ZS7
My Eye-Fi: 8GB Pro X2

Yes, it does sound clear that you bought the card without knowing what it does or even what type of memory card it is. I'm confused, doesn't it say "SDHC" on the front and back of the box, and have a full-size picture of an SD card? What format did you think it was?

At least it works with your wife's camera and it sounds like you've got it uploading wirelessly.

Maybe one day the Eye-Fi engineers will add a feature that lets you upload to the card (not just from it) or access its filesystem wirelessly...would be pretty cool, though I imagine cramming a SMB/CIFS server into the card will probably never happen.
