Suggest free trial of Geotagging upgrade

Postby jphphotography on Sat Dec 06, 2008 5:15 pm

Hey, I just picked up an eye-fi share because currently the only Canadian distributor (Blacks Photography) does not sell the "Explore" model. I was pleased to find out you offer an upgrade to this feature however I'm not sure if the density of wireless networks is good enough to realistically support geotagging. It would be nice to have a free trial to test the functionality of this service in my area. I think if it works as well as your website claims then you'll find you'll have a large amount of upgrades once people are "hooked" from the free trial. Its win win really ;)

Thanks,

While I don't disagree that a trial would be nice, in the meantime one way to tell with reasonable certainty how successful you can expect geotagging to be is to download Skyhook's utility Loki (www.loki.com) to your laptop (or wireless phone, if it supports wifi) and cruise the areas you want to shoot in. If you get a location with Loki, there's a good chance the card will be able to tag (bear in mind that the card will have slightly reduced sensitivity as compared to the laptop).

Hi there,

I was thinking the same thing when I picked up the card from Blacks.

I live in Vancouver and so far the geotagging has been pretty good. Nails my house perfectly, and aside from one dead zone (which I knew was a deadzone beforehand) the worst tag I got was about a third of a block out.

If you're living in a more rural area with less wifi kicking around I can see how this would be a disappointing upgrade, but in an urban setting you should be ok.
