Camera will NOT turn on with Eye-Fi Card!

Postby rivenagares » Wed Dec 21, 2011 2:48 am

As you can imagine I am very frustrated right now.

Both of my cameras are listed as being compatible with the Eye-fi Pro x2 card. I use a 5D Mark II as well as a Rebel T1i.
I opened the package, plugged the card, via the USB reader it came with into my computer that runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I followed the instructions to set it up and opened my account.
When everything was set, I ejected the card, placed it into my T1i, turned on the camera... and nothing.

At first I thought my battery was dead...but upon taking it out (i had to, toggling on and off even with the old card did nothing, i had to remove the battery) i found out the battery was full.
I tried this a few times and the camera will turn on with the old card, but not the Eye-fi.

I also tried the Eye-fi in my 5D Mark II via an adaptor, same thing. the Camera will not turn on with this card inside.

Please help, this card is way too expensive for these types of problems!

Eye-Fi does not support the use of CF adapters. People use them and some adapters might work, but the card is not engineered for use with them and your results will vary.

The Canon T1i issue you are describing is a known problem we are working with Canon to resolve. Eye-Fi and Canon have found that a small number of SLR bodies exhibit bizarre behavior on the SD interface, causing the issue you are describing. Unfortunately, you have a T1i body that is effected with this behavior. There have been a few others that also have this issue with their Canon T1i, but the vast majority of our users who use a T1i are not affected.

Here are your options:

- Replace your T1i body (either return it to the retailer or RMA it with Canon)
- Search the forums for a different adapter for use in your 5D Mark II
- Return the Eye-Fi card

i was led to believe this was a firmware issue and that you guys were testing ways to have it fixed.

am i to understand its a hardware issue? because that leaves me in a strange place due to the fact that i no longer have the original packaging for my card and cannot return it. these issues were not reported anywhere so i feel a bit slighted with my purchase. if it is a firmware issue, i can wait for a potential fix but otherwise i wont lie, i feel a bit cheated.

the 5D issue, you're correct, i wrote that in error. however, your website states there are "no know issues" with the t1i. so you can imagine my disappointment.

i'm even willing to help beta test if that will help you guys out, but hearing there is no solution sucks.

It is possible this can be resolved with firmware for the Eye-Fi card... more likely it would be resolved with a firmware update for the T1i. The number of T1i bodies affected is very very low... which is why this is not widely reported.

You have a good point about this problem not showing up in the known issues portion of the camera compatibility database. Look for that to be changed today.

We are actively working with Canon on the issue. If any new information comes to light, or if any fixes are available, I will be posting in this thread with updates.

Rivenagares,

Just out of curiosity, have you ever installed any software on your T1i? Magic lantern for instance, or any other software that modify's the cameras functionality in any way?

Oh that's ridiculous!

Sure, Canon will simply turn off the BootFlag, you can do this yourself and save all the trouble time and money of taking your camera to a service centre.

The way to fix this problem is in the following manner.

With a Magic Lantern Bootable Chip intalled in your camera, select firware upgrade, once selected, follow the menu and change it to remove Magic lantern from you camera, then once you have the green text screen move your camera dial to a position other than the bootflag ones mentioned on that screen, example select (Full Auto), then power off you camera, inert your Eye-Fi and it will now work.

You Eye-Fi card will then work fine as the bootflag is no longer on! thats all it is that stops it from functioning.

The Eye-Fi card simply wont handle bootflag being on (nothing more, nothing less), Magic Lantern needs the bootflag on in order to load the firmware, if its a choice between the two I know like me and most of you that you would rather have the magic lantern software as opposed to being able to wireless send your images to another device. I guess its the 100 benefits like video audio image etc as opposed to 1 benefit being wireless.

I hope the Eye-Fi developers rectify this soon with a firmware upgrade otherwise people will start selling their X2's and purchase the other WiFi SD cards that are becoming available on the market, a search on eBay and already there are several brands available.

I think it should be as simple as setting a flag in software.... but Im not a software developer.

Anyhow good luck with it all, better hurry is all I can say as people would want to have both the magic lantern and wifi capable cards.

That worked perfectly for me. My 500d now works with the X2!

I guess I found part of my problem. Use the "firmware update process" to remove bootflag. Installed ML on Eyefi card and still does not recognize ML
