Setup to sync to PC but fallback to direct mode thru iOS?

Postby tmchow » Mon Jul 04, 2011 8:26 pm

I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to setup my EyeFi X2 Pro card to use my home's Wifi to sync with my PC using the EyeFi center, but then fallback to direct mode and sync to my iOS device when I'm out.

According to the FAQ (http://support.eye.fi/mobile-applications/direct-mode-faq/), I should be able to do what I want. However, in practice I"m seeing weird prompts with my EyeFi iOS app and the EyeFi center. They seem to be battling each other and keep asking me to choose between syncing with my iPhone or my PC.

In the EyeFi Center under "Photos", the box is checked for "Upload all photos to E:\eyefi". But when I have this enabled, and turn the sync'ing on in my iOS device, it then asks me whether I want to switch sync'ing to my PC and instead sync with my iPhone.

Instead, I would expect to be able to have both -- wifi first, then if not present (like when I'm out at the park), it would fallback to direct mode with my iPhone.

Am I confused or is this not possible? If so, how do I set it up properly?

tmchow,

Unfortunately, this isn't possible right now. You can only have one desktop destination active for any Eye-Fi card at any one time. For now, you have to choose between wanting to upload to your computer and wanting to upload to your iOS device.

There is an option in the iOS application which allows you to upload to both your computer and your iOS device, but this option doesn't sound like it's what you want?

No, this unfortunately is a severe limitation. My iOS device (my iPad and my iPhone) are constrained on space due to videos, music and apps. Since my EyeFi card is 8GB, loading 8GB to my iOS device isn't a good approach.

It would make a lot of sense for EyeFi to enable this.. it makes the most sense to your customers and I've seen a bunch of messages in the forums asking about this in one way or another. Is it even likely that you'll enable this in a future update?

If you'd like to file a request for this feature, I know the opinions expressed on the feature request forums (viewforum.php?f=10) are considered when new features are brought to the table.

I can't really comment on how likely this feature will be in future releases of the software :(

The rules are the same, only 1 device at a time (mobile or computer) can be designated to receive files directly from the card.

The card can fall back to Direct Mode when you're out of range of your network, but whatever destination you last set (PC, iPhone, etc.) will remain paired with the card. To switch your destination to your mobile device, just open the app settings, choose Eye-Fi Card Settings, choose the card, and switch uploads to the device.
