iOS App Size

iPhone related discussion relating to the Eye-Fi app for the iPhone

iOS App Size

Postby comic » Fri Jan 13, 2012 3:45 am

Here's an interesting issue. I was going through iTunes deleting apps so I could have room for RAW photos being sent to my phone during an event in a few weeks. I'd cleared out a few large file-sized apps and only had a few remaining. I looked at the apps that had information inside of them that wasn't "part of the app" according to iTunes. Knocked down the free space a few more gigabytes. I accidentally clicked EyeFi and saw the used space jump down by 2GB's.

I was baffled. How can a 2.7 MEGABYTE application which sends the photos directly to the device camera roll, consume 2.1 GIGABYTES of space? Below is a video of the issue.

I've done some digging and found the source of bloat (not sure why the App directory is missing a name). I don't know what these files are yet, but the largest I've seen is about 60MB's, but I have 395 of these averaging about 6MBs each. I have not taken any photos that come close to 20MBs and don't have video transfers enabled. The directory name is the MAC address of my previous EyeFi Card. I feel safe in deleting the directory but I feel like I'd mess up the SQLite DB (or w/e this DB structure is). I'll muck around some more and see if I can find the contents of at least one of the files.

Odd thing, the directory for my current card only has one of these files from 01/09/12. I know I've done some iOS to Computer transfers with this prior to that date, so maybe the bug got squashed in an app update.

I've noticed a similar bug. I haven't dug into the actual files, but my current Eye-Fi app on my iPad takes up 2.5GB of space...I have the feeling it is storing all the pictures it has ever come across...
Maybe I should try deleting the app and sync it back from iTunes ? Anyone tried that?

Same issue here. three main issues with the card.

1. Direct mode connection is flakey. lots of restarting app and turning camera on and off to get it to reconnect. when it is connected, it works great.
2. Need the option somehow to select what to upload to iphone. While all is the default, this can be an isssue if your iphone is not in sync. for example, i had probably 100 pics i had not synced with my iphone. then i went to disney and started taking pics and before i could get those, i had to receive the other 100. this was not good for my battery life. card needs some sort of option to say "ONLY UPLOAD NEW PICS"
2. App size. after uploading all the 100 images to my iphone, i now have a message that the app has 100 uploaded images. but i cant clear it. more importantly... i have deleted all but 2 or 3 images from my iphone. HOWEVER... the usage data in settings on the iphone shows an app that is over a gig in size... so even though i have deleted all the pics, the app still seems to show them all.

How do i clear them??? i do not want to delete the app as i will lose my wifi/direct settings. this seems to be a pretty big bug. and one that will continue to get larger and basically eat all the memory on my ios device.
