Transferring RAW files from iPad to computer!

Postby gazza41 on Sun May 01, 2011 2:13 am

Hi All
Let me say first of all, THE reason I went out and bought the pro x2 was because it should work with RAW and with an iPad. I know my camera (Pentax k100) works with the iPad but as soon as I put the Eye-fi between them, then the problems start.
My problem is that when I transfer the RAW file to the iPad, it saves the file as a TIF file and a broken one too!! No mater how I transfer it. The eye fi manager can't read the file (RAW) either.
If I use the cheaper method ie. plug in my Apple connector adaptor it works wonderfuly but using the eye fi method... No luck.
JPEG work great too but that's not why I bought the pro version. I could have saved myself a lot of money if that were the reason. I work with RAW.
I'm very disappointed. After all the hype...
If I don't find a solution soon I'll be bringing it back to the shop tomorrow. Save myself 100€.

I'm having the same problem, I can transfer raw files from my Sony nex 3 to my iPad but once there I can't view them. Any jpeg images i transfer can be viewed. This is a real problem as it's the reason I got the pro card and I hope a solution can be found soon.

Ok. I give in. Took the card back yesterday. I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer. Oh well... It would have been brilliant if it had worked but I'm just too busy to mess around with something that obviously doesn't work. Shame.

I have the exact same problem.

My Nikon D90's NEF files transfer fine, but show up as small bad quality tiffs once on my iPhone 4.

Makes my Pro card useless. RAW was the only reason I chose the pro card.

Has anyone tried the option to have the Eye-Fi app auto-upload the images it receives from the card to the computer?

iOS devices do not support RAW files, this is not Eye-Fi's fault. However I feel like the app should be able to wirelessly upload the RAW images to your computer if it's set to do it automatically since the files are being put on the iPad, you just can't view them. Not being able to view files shouldn't prevent the Eye-Fi app from uploading it if my understanding is correct. (However I do not have a camera that takes RAW so I can't test this).

I would be curious to hear if it works the way I think it does. If that does not work, I would suggest setting your computer as the destination for RAW images, I know that works.

The iPad does support RAW files and you can view them. The problem is with the iOS eyefi app and the way it saves the images to he photo library.

I think the iPad can maybe view some RAW file types and not others. Either way, I checked with a friend who cannot view her RAW images on the iPad (regardless of Eye-Fi) but when using Direct Mode and the app set to auto upload to her computer, the RAW images are transferred and can be viewed properly on the computer

Like I said, using the Eye fi to transfer from the camera to the Ipad doesn't work. It should, as the Ipad is fully compatible to the Pentax RAW file format (PEF). Using the Apple Connector Kit, it does. So, it's not a problem with the Ipad, it's the way the app saves the files. If you try to transfer them from the ipad to the computer, that doesn't work either. All you get is a broken Tif file that won't open.
It works wonderfully with Jpeg so I might, just might, go get the cheaper version (great fun at weddings) but, to call the card "Pro" !!!! A waste of money.

So, to the gentlemen at Eye fi. Make this product worthy of the name "pro" and make it work with "professional" photographer and not against them. The whole idea of this card, which I might add, is a very good one, is to make things easier. It's a software problem. Your software. Get it sorted. Please.

I am in the process of hopefully resolving this problem with tech support, from my own testing ( and perhaps other people can check this for themselves) files that are transferred to the iPad via eyefi app will not open. If I transfer the same file directly to the iPad via the apps window in iTunes (in my case directly into filterstorm) I can view them. The problem I would guess is the way the eyefi app saves files into the picture app once they have been transferred.

What are other people experiences?

Hi,

I'm also one of the users which face same problem. I bought the pro x2 was because it should work with RAW file and with my iPad2. I'm using Nikon D90 and works with the iPad. My RAW file to become TIFF thumbnails whenever I transfer to my iPad2. I have no problem to transfer my RAW files to my Ipad2 with connector kit. Is either problems on iOS apps or the eye-fi card.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Thanks,
Shawn

Add me to the list of frustrated users. I have the Eye-Fi Pro Card, and also camera connection kit. Transferring RAW to my iPad via the Apple Camera Connection kit works fine, however I only get unreadable data when using the Eye-Fi card. Extremely annoying. The one killer feature IMO about this card, doesn't even work. This card is now useless to me.

Hope it can get fixed and soon!
