Firewall Tuning - Testing incoming connections fails

Postby ywickham » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:53 am

When I start the Eye-Fi Helper, testing failes at "Testing incoming connections". I really could use some help with this. The card was given to me as a gift at Christmas and I have yet to be able to use it. This is very dissappointing.

I've searched the forums for a solution to this problem, but there are either a ton of unanswered queries.

I have the X2 8GB+Wi-Fi card and am trying to setup the Manager on a mac. I do not have the firewall enabled on the mac, because I have a firewall enabled on my router. I am using a Linksys E3000 router.

I would love some help in fixing this issue. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem in Windows 7. Tried everything but nothing is working.

Turned off Windows Firewall.
Turned off Avast antivirus.
Port-forwarded every port from 50000 to 60000 the PC.
Watching Eye-Fi helper open close/fail ports in this range using Process Explorer TCP-IP monitor.
CAN NOT see why it is failing or how to get it working.

p.s. I have degree in computer science and 15 years experience working in I.T. - how is average Joe supposed to figure this out??? Why can't Eye-Fi tuning give more information instead of BS "check your internet connectivity and retry"

When I try and run Eye-Fi Center it immediately runs Firewall Tuning and then it fails at "Testing incoming connections" and then Eye-Fi Center shuts down. I paid big money for this 8Gb X2 card last November and I haven't been able to use it with my EOS-1D since buying it. Not recommending it to anyone I know  . Worst piece of software I've bought in a long time.

hi geogan,

Sorry to hear that the firewall tuning isn't succeeding on your system. On most systems, either the tests pass without issue, or your firewall software prompts you to allow/block Eye-Fi Helper, you choose Allow, and then it passes.

What happens when you ping "localhost" in a command window? Your system should ping itself at 127.0.0.1.

If this succeeds, launch Eye-Fi Helper again. Before running the firewall test again, visit this link in your browser: http://localhost:59278/FirewallTest

You should see "OK". If not, what do you receive instead?

If these tests fail: by any chance, have you modified your system's hosts file?

Just to confirm: the test that's failing is definitely the second one, "Testing incoming connections" right? I want to make sure it's not the first one, "Listening for incoming connections".

Thanks.

Well whad'ya know - it WAS the localhost parameter. How did you know?

The last few lines of my hosts file had this line which redirected localhost to that ip!??

#block trojan

89 248 171 46 localhost

Did a Reversedns and found this:

89 248 171 46 resolves to
"hosted-by ecatel net"
Top Level Domain: "ecatel net"
Country IP Address: NETHERLANDS

Then found this page on forums malwarebytes org (showtopic=39925) which shows IPs including this one and says: "Security Tool. All detected with MBAM, ..."

Searched for MBAM and it appears to be MalwareBytes AntiMalware which i have the free version installed.

I have NO idea if MBAM changed the localhost for some reason - it doesn't make sense??? Didn't look more into it yet.

I tried that test URL you gave but it didn't work - just got page cannot be displayed in IE8. But then I ran the tests in Helper and all three completed successfully in a few seconds. So there you go. At last I'll be able to use the Eye-Fi card!...

Sorry had to modify all IPs by removing dots because of your protection "Your post looks too spamy for a new user, please remove off-site URLs"

Excellent news, geogan! I'm glad that helped you identify the problem.

We hear from users with modified hosts files from time to time...actually more often than I'd expect.

Enjoy!

I am having this same issue. I have checked my hosts file and there is no redirect for localhost. It is the stock file, and has no entries in it, with the exception of the entries that are commented out. I have tried the URL that was noted (and also with replacing localhost with 127.0.0.1) and I get "Unable to connect". I have tried with my firewall off. I have verified the firewall settings for Eye-Fi Helper, and even added public networks to the allowed range, all to no avail. I can also ping localhost without issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

Eric,

I sent you an email from our support system (support@eye.fi) with instructions that should help you fix this issue since you have confirmed that your scenario is not a localhost problem. Let me know if that works for you.

Thanks,
Joe

my"host" file had 0.0.0.0 localhost (don't know why)

I removed it and the error disappeared. What if your program would check for this issue instead of spitting out "check your internet connection"?

Thanks for the solution.

I am having an issue too. I am running on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 and have turned the firewall on and off but still fails on the Testing Incoming Connections. I do want to point out that every time I launch the Helper App, it fails the first time through on Listening for Incoming Connections, but immediately on a Retry - it passes.

Here is my Hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

Any suggestions? I normally use this with no issues on my Win7 machine, but am traveling and using my wife's Mac and am really suffering!

thnx!

hi btolly,

That looks like the normal hosts file, as long as there are no other uncommented lines in the file. If you haven't done so already, please restart the Mac and try again. Try the URL test (while Eye-Fi Helper is running) and 'ping localhost' tests I recommended above to geogan: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4804#p23581

If those tests pass: are you running VirusBarrier or any other program that filters network traffic on your Mac? Maybe it's getting in the way.

If this doesn't help, please send us your Eye-Fi Helper log, which you'll find at /Users/<your_username>/Library/Eye-Fi/EyeFi.log
Either post it here or attach it to an email to support@eye.fi. Please link to this thread and let us know your results so far.

Thanks!

I had the same problem with hosts file.
But in my case hosts settings were fine, end line delimiters were wrong.
Please look at this topic: discussions {dot} apple {dot} com {slash} message {slash} 20103434#20103434
You could easly change delimiters type with Sublime 2.
