Upload to both iPhone and Computer

Postby montecdata » Wed Jun 29, 2011 7:54 am

Hi

The transfer mode setting specifies if I would like to update all (or only marked protected in camera) photos to my computer and/or online service.
Nice. And also proves that Eye-Card is done for multiple uploads, not only to one location.

But why do I then need to choose to upload only to iPhone OR only to my computer? My typical usage is to upload all (or only some) photos to my iPhone (on the run, using direct-mode) and later sync them all to my computer. Exactly as transfer mode setting, but not to online service and computer OR iPhone, instead to computer and iPhone.
To solve this today, I need to pull the card out of the camera and put into my computer, and also check what files I already have copied, and so on. Wasn't the idea that I shouldn't need to do this with a Eye-Fi card?

Please adjust the transfer mode and card behavior to allow multiple destination freely, not hardcoded to one device and one online service.
There are other feature requests asking for same matter, but I took the liberty to describe the issue here more clear and extensive.

Thanks
Fredrik

You currently can have photos go to both phone and a computer destination. You pair your card to the phone then using Center, set your phone's destination to your computer. Lastly, in the phone app, under settings->upload preferences, check 'Upload to Computer'.

As I understand I can not direct use both phone and computer as destination.
I can have phone as destination, and from there use Eye-Fi service to upload to my computer from phone.

But doesn't this requires me to sync ALL photos to my phone? Not like transfer mode setting, where I can choose to to upload some photos?
Upload to phone take quite some time, so I upload only marked ones.

This feature request has my strong vote.

I brought this up in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4672&p=18672#p18672

Another user brought it up here:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4671

Having the EyeFi use a prioritization mechanism for connections seems like a no brainer:

1. If preferred wifi network available, sync to PC
2. If not preferred wifi network available, enable direct mode to sync with iOS device
etc

This allows users to leave their houses, sync to iPhone/iPad, then when they come back home they can auto sync to PC.

This is what I also want.

To clarify:
Sync some photos to phone when I'm on the run
Sync all photos to computer when I'm back home.

Bonus points if I could use endless memory mode with which removes photos synced to the computer, but not those which only were synced to the phone.

Thanks

Isn't this what the card does already? i know that i can sync at home to my pc and when i'm far from my router and no known networks are found, it starts up direct mode and transfers to my ipod without having to change any settings on the card.

While you can set this up so that both the phone/ipod/ipad get the photos AND your pc at home gets the photos as well, you can't setup a card to go to multiple computer destinations. That said, you can set the card to either your phone or computer. If set to your phone, you can enable the phone to send to your PC as well. When you arrive at home (or you allow it to go over 3g/4g network), it will transfer to your PC. The end result is that all photos will go to your phone first then to your PC. The Endless memory function with this would be useful (on the phone side).

But that would require me to sync ALL photots/videos to my phone, and that will take forever.....
When I'm on the run, I of course only want to sync some photos to the phone, and when at home sync all of them.

I definitely vote for this!

I have my card set up to sync to my iPad and my iPad to sync to my PC which should do the trick. BUT...
Recently, getting back from vacation and having ordered a photo book with the best images I suddenly realized that I was missing a huge number of images on my computer. It turned out that they were stuck on the iPad!

I think the reason is a combination of two factors:
1) iPad upload is extremely slow for photos. For video it's plain ridiculous.
2) The app does not prevent the iPad from going to sleep (even though I checked the setting)

After several hours keeping both the iPad and PC awake by flicking the screen from time to time I finally managed to get all my photos (which weren't that many) synced.

Apart from this, I imagine that for most people the mobile device (phone/iPad/Android/whatever) will never be the final/primary destination so having to rely on it as a "middle man" seems illogical.

In the future I think I will have to skip the iPad as a destination - even though it is nice to get instant preview it is more important for me to have the photos available on my PC.

The feature that matches the requirement

Sync some photos to phone when I'm on the run
Sync all photos to computer when I'm back home.

is so obvious I am surprised that it's not already there. I just got my mobile X2 saturday and here we are monday with me looking how to do this on the forum and now posting the feature request. It must be very common for people to have a much better camera than the iphone and want to email/post pics on the spot. I used it on Saturday for a kids soccer tourney and to email just one pic from my DSLR I ended up with 75 pics on my phone that I had to delete as well as manually xfer the pics back to my computer.

I agree. I ended up having to copy my images to the second card on the camera and back to the SD card to get the images to all transfer to the computer and be added to the SQLite database. When I tried transferring the iPhone images, all I got was the shots I took with the iPhone. The camera images I had transferred to the iPhone in the field were not included.
We need an option to reset the value of marklastphotoinroll to re-transfer all images on the card to the computer, or something like that.

Let me add my thumbs-up for this request too! It would be nice to have different routing templates for different situations. I've got all modes, computer, iPad and FTP configured, but I'm still not sure what's going where given the network delays.
If it's implemented, I think that although the user instructions are quite clear, I found that some of the routing information needs to be even clearer. It took me a while to figure out what was uploading to where .. same with downloading. Maybe some diagrams are in order.

I have a question for this Bruce,
where is the Endless memory function on the phone/ipad side?
I can't find it :X

Until iOS 5 was released, apps running on iPhones and iPad could not delete items that were deleted into the camera roll, so an endless-memory-like feature was impossible to implement (on non-jail-broken phones), so it was not considered. Now, with the release of iOS 5, it is on the drawing board. (And we try to keep a close approximation of feature parity on both platforms where we can, so we didn't move forward with it on Android, either.)

Hi Eye-Fi team,

Such a fantastic product (conceptually at least)!

i have to agree with all the posts on this thread. I purchased this product today and i am in complete disbelief this feature is not supported already - not being able load a photo taken on my DSLR to multiple devices (ie. iphone/s, ipad, multiple PC's) which is pretty much the reason i bought the product.

As a likely scenario, i'm out with my DSLR - i take some photos. I want the option to have some or all of the images on my iphone &/or ipad immediately. My wife may want them on her iphone as well. Then i get home, i want to upload *all* the images into my mac iPhoto library *AND* my wife wants them all in her iPhoto library on another mac as well.

Seamless transmission of content (selectively) from the camera to multiple devices - whether on the home wifi network or without *public* wifi present. If at home, auto select my wifi network. If out, use the Direct Option - but make it all work without any intervention.

Can someone from EyeFi pls provide an update on the progress of this development???? Otherwise its all a bit of a (expensive) waste of time.

thanks in advance for this great *almost there* product.

I just got the 8GB X2 Pro Card. I'm using an iMac running OSX Lion (10.7.3), Aperture 3.2.2. For my mobile device, I'm using an iPad2 with iOS 5.0.1n and the Eye-Fi app. I'm shooting photos with my Canon Powershot S95.

What I've done is enable Apple's Photostream on my iMac and iPad and using it to move photos around automatically. I'm still figuring out how the card works, but here's how I've got it set up: (1) take photo with camera, (2) camera sends photo to the Wifi network in my house, (3) photo is downloaded to Eye-Fi app on the iPad AND added to Photostream album on the iPad, (4) Photostream adds photo to Photostream album on my iMac. No need to open the Eye-Fi center on my iMac, but it appears I do need to have the Eye-Fi app open on the iPad for this all to flow as described above.

I actually wish steps 3 and 4 were reversed, but so far it's working fine. Can't wait to try Direct mode and see how Photostream works with that.

+1 from me too

I agree with the need for this feature and also posted another thread about this along with something similar. The best way to think of it is that I'd like the images copied to my ipad instantly for review purposes while shooting, but always have everything copied to my computer at home even if it takes longer. So in a sense it's kind of like I want a tethered shooting workflow with my iPad but with the ipad acting as a temporary viewer rather than the final destination for image editing, etc. The iPad shouldn't have to be working to get all the images uploaded to a real backup location.

Since a couple of people mentioned wanting to sync some images to a phone "on the run" and a computer "when I get home," I'd like to add that my preferred use case would be to have a computer and hot spot with me all the time and sync both directions at once, removing the photo from the card when synced to all destinations. (Effectively endless memory as some have phrased it.) Further, I'd like to filter each destination by image type (JPG to iPad, JPG, NEF and AVI/MPG to computer).

I really like the idea of the Eye-Fi but have not yet "jumped in." Having this capability would probably tip the scales enough for me to buy one!

Definitely +1

An easy way to implement this might be to add "Sync to iPhone" as part of the Social Network sharing options, which can already be controlled separately from computer uploads with the Protect/Unprotect flag.

Even though I only move photos to my phone in order to email, post to facebook, or iMessage, setting up an automatic share to Facebook isn't any help because I want to customize the recipients each time.

Please add this feature! As a professional photographer, it would do wonders for my workflow. I shoot in RAW+JPEG, and have no need for the RAW photos until I get back to my computer where my Adobe Camera RAW editing software is installed. I'd like to use my iPad to preview abd share select JPEGs on Facebook and Flickr while in the field, without having to wait for a queue of 25MP RAWs to upload to my iPad.

+1 for this.

Ideally I'd like some kind of "By Device" or "By App type" config for transfer mode, rather than it being applied universally.

Eg, For computer named "MyLaptop123" copy all photos that haven't already been copied to that device. For Android device named "MyPhone456" use selective copy, and for iPad device "MyIpadWith64GBOfPremiumCostStorageIdealForBackingUpPhotosOnTheGo" copy all photos that haven't already been copied to it.

An alternative would be to allow the Apps to pull photos rather than have photos pushed to them.

Eg I've just taken a photo of a cute squirrel in the park that I know my twitter followers are going to love. I fire up the app on my 'Droid, it connects to the EyeFi in direct mode, gives me thumbnails of the last X photos, I select the best one (I shot on continuous mode obviously! Gotten snap 'em all), the photo is downloaded then I can use the inbuilt sharing function to wow my Tens of followers.

Then, when I get home from a busy day of juxtapositioning, all the photos get copied to my Macbook where I can merrily increase those highlight levels and crop to my heart's content.

Any clues as to when this might become a feature?

+1. I was shocked when I got this and set it up today, that this feature is missing. I just assumed given the abilities of the card, there would be some way to set this up. (jpg -> phone, raw->computer). But as I was setting it up, and i saw "please choose your destination: phone OR computer", I started to realize my purchase may not have been all i was hoping for. It just seems silly, why would I even have the option to send raw images to my phone? :? If I had known this, I probably got the cheaper card, and used it just for syncing jpgs to my phone for quick uploading, etc. To me, it's kind of false advertising.

Crossing my fingers for a firmware update soon. :)

Oh, and +1 for the feature request...IF you're counting.

Update (12/13)...it appears your engineers and programmers have been busy developing Circ. That's should be time well spent
