Nikon D800 won't connect at all

Postby gtpsrock » Thu Mar 29, 2012 5:32 pm

Just got a new Nikon D800 and tried my Connect x2 4gb Eye-Fi card in it (running 5.0008) and it just isn't working.

I've tried both connecting to a wifi and direct mode to ipad3 and iphone4. Neither will connect. In direct mode, it's wifi hotspot name won't appear on the iPad, iPhone, or wifi enabled computer. It will momentarily if I shoot continuously, but goes away after a few seconds.

I have the Eye-Fi mode turned on in the camera. I can take the card out and put it in my wife's Nikon D5100 or my GoPro and it works like a charm. There have been others on another forum that have had success with it supposedly. I've tried all image modes (raw+jpeg, and jpeg only).

I am also well within range of the wif router and iPad/iPhone (less than 1-2').

Thanks in advance. I'm pulling my hair out...

Could you please post a card log here so that we can look into the matter further? To grab a log:

- take a few pictures, and wait a few minutes to give them a chance to upload
- insert the Eye-Fi card and reader into your computer
- click the Eye-Fi Helper icon in your menu bar/system tray and select "Get Eye-Fi Card log..."
- save the file and attach it in this thread

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your response. I uploaded the file like you suggested.

I also noticed that after about 10 seconds after taking a picture, the Eye-Fi logo/antenna looking icon on the LCD screen will start scrolling like it's trying to connect. I also noticed that the LED (that shows when info is being written to the memory card) flashes occasionally after a picture is taken. Which makes me think that it's trying to do something as it won't do that with a normal non-Eye-Fi SD card.

Thanks again!

Did that log file help at all Joe?

Is there a beta version that I could try? Or a previous version? I'm really hoping to get this working soon.

Very sorry for the delay. I see that you have an open ticket with Mary in support, and we are working on getting your issue resolved. We now have a D800 in the office here and are testing to try and reproduce your issue. Please continue checking your email for updates; we hope to have something for you soon.

Thanks for your patience,

I'm having similar problems with an 8gb sdhc card. However the d800 manual only lists the x2 pro version as the one the camera is compatible with. Mine is the mobile card, not the x2 pro. Could that be a similar issue?

I have tried both the regular 4gb and the 8gb x2 pro and have problems with them both. So that's funny that it lists that that the x2 pro is the only one that is compatible... Because is sure doesn't seem to be at this point.

gtpsrock,

Progress was made today on this issue after I was able to reproduce the behavior you are seeing. This information has been escalated to our engineers, so we should have an update on the matter soon. Thank you for bringing this issue up, and thanks for your patience up to this point.

I too am very interested in a solution. In my tests... it works fine when NOT in direct mode. Big problems when trying to work in "direct mode" to my iPad. I downloaded the latest Eye-fi patch it's worse than my previous update from a year ago. The Eye-fi card works perfect on my Canon pocketshooter.

The main issue is the card is unable to maintain a consistent wifi ssid for the iPad to lock on for more than a brief period for apps to use.

I too am experiencing no connection at all with D800. On your compatibility page it lists an issue with direct mode only, however I can't get 8gb Pro x2 to work at all, in any mode.

I have the latest firmware and enabled it within menu settings on camera.

Would much appreciate an update as I need this for a client on May 20th. Keeping my fingers crossed, god speed!!!

The results are back and I am sorry to report that it looks like the D800's SD slot is the factor contributing to the lack of steady signal while in direct mode. There were some varied results with moving the D800 closer to the direct mode target, and keeping the door on the D800 open, but we will need to keep the D800 listed as not compatible with direct mode due to this matter. This is not something that can be fixed with a firmware update, so at this point it looks like we may not be able to move forward with this issue. The D800 passes all tests where the Eye-Fi card is connecting to a wireless network, but unfortunately our card's ability to create its own network with a strong signal is an issue. With that being said, I really do like using this camera, so it is a shame that this particular feature doesn't work with the D800.

So how can I get my money back? Can I send you a receipt and the card directly to you? Adorama will no longer take the card back as I purchased it Feb 17th 2012. It is completely unusable and both your site, Adorama and Nikon claimed it would work with D800 at time of purchase. I have no other camera which accepts SD cards. Currently in the hole $99!

TickingProductions,

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

The card should be working fine (aside from direct mode), so It does sound like the card you have may be defective. Would you be so kind as to send us the logs? In the meantime I will see about setting up an RMA or prompt exchange for you.

1. Insert your Eye-Fi card into your camera
2. Take 5 pictures
3. Wait 5 minutes to give the photos a chance to upload
4. Remove the card from your camera *
5. Insert the Eye-Fi card into the USB card reader and into your computer
6. Click on the Eye-Fi Helper icon in the Apple Menu Bar or in the Windows Task Bar
7. Select "Get Eye-Fi card Log..." from the menu. You may have to wait several seconds, but, in a moment, you will be asked where to save the Eye-Fi card log file
8. Save the Eye-Fi card.log file to your computer hard drive and reply to this forum thread with your log file attached

Should we go with the RMA/exchange route, and since I have a D800, I could absolutely ensure the card we send you works fully with the D800. Let me know what you think.

SamF that works for me. I'm just heading out the door to the airport for a 10 day shoot in Michigan. I'll do this as soon as I get back. Can you contact me via email: brandon@tickingproductions, I'd prefer we communicate via email instead of the forum from here on out. Thanks!

Can you go into more detail? Why is the Eye-fi card able to transmit images to a to a router, but not to my iPad in direct mode?

Is the issue D800 not delivering enough power to the card?

vfk,

A few updates.

Since your last post we have been looking into this matter further. As of today we are still in contact with Nikon regarding the D800 (this specific matter included.) On our end I have tested a D800 with a card that we increased the power on, keeping the D800 door open and moving the camera close to the target, but in my tests the results were not passing to my liking. Moving the card's antenna outside of the D800 of course works, so I do believe the card is receiving enough power while in the SD slot. Even when increasing the power used on the card's antenna to increase the range of the card I still was seeing bad results. At this point the network being created by the card while in the D800 is not working consistently, but we will be reviewing this issue as we continue to work on new firmware updates. I will post again if we have any updates.

I am also seeing this problem, it is definitely not reliable even with the door open and the unit very close to an ipad. I'm posting to get an update from this thread when there is new news.

My D800 used to work sporadically (50/50) in direct mode as long as I was within 5m, but since I updated the camera's firmware I get nothing. Now even the wireless router method is completely unreliable. I totally feel ripped off buying this Eye-Fi and unless these issues are sorted out soon. I will post negative reviews on all forums and online retailers. I bought this card specifically because it was supposedly supported by the D800. Paying $100 for a SLOW 8GB SD card is a joke!

hi MadManAce,

These D800 issues were a surprise to us as well. Please make sure the Eye-Fi upload feature is enabled in your Setup menu - maybe the firmware update turned that setting off somehow. Remove a CF card if you're using one, and shoot some JPEGs onto the Eye-Fi card in the SD slot. Look for the Eye-Fi wireless icon toward the bottom left of your info display. It should show a full dot (not an empty circle) and start animating once uploads start.

If that does not help, please copy any photos off the card that you wish to save. Connect the card to your computer using the Eye-Fi reader, and format it using the default method on your system. (On Windows: right click, choose Format, and quick format as FAT32; on Mac, open Disk Utility and Erase as MSDOS/FAT.) When this is done, disconnect and re-connect the card and reader, open Eye-Fi Center and add your wi-fi network to the card again. (http://support.eye.fi/cards/networks/ho ... e-fi-card/) Remove any other networks listed under the "Remove" section of Private Networks.

Next, please shoot some JPEG photos within 3 meters of your router. If they transfer slowly or not at all, please connect the card back to your computer and send us your Eye-Fi card log. (for instructions: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5776 ) Attach the log to an email to support@eye.fi, with a link to this thread, and we'll be happy to take a look.

Thank you!

The instructions helped and it works again with my home network, but not having direct mode work is still a major disappointment that I hope is remedied soon.

Hi.. Any updates on the D800 issue? I just bought mu first Eye Fi card (the Pro X2 8GB) hoping to use it with my Nikon D800.

I was going crazy thinking I was doing something wrong until I found this thread.

My card works fine over my wifi network, but the Direct Mode (the main reason I bought the card) does not work while in the D800. It works just fine outside of the camera.

Is someone working on this?

Thank you.

Also eagerly awaiting a fix. Very frustrated.

While Direct mode doesn't work either, I just simply need to be able to connect through my personal wifi router. It will seem to connect, but I waited nearly 10 minutes for a single image (smallest jpeg) to transfer. The wifi icon on the back of the screen continues to animate the entire time.

I have configured everything correctly and am using a fairly new Linkys wireless N router.

At this moment, I think it's clear that you should not be advertising the D800 as a compatible camera on your website.

Hope to see an update soon. Thank you.

Same thing here, the card is not working in Direct Mode on my D800, i still haven't try it on a local network.

On the D300s is working perfectly.

I hope there will be good news soon.

To all those awaiting an update regarding the D800 + Direct Mode issue, there are no significant reports to make on this front. As Sam mentioned before, it appears that this issue is related to the hardware used in the D800 camera body, which would mean that we would not be able to remedy the issue with a firmware update.

With that said, our engineers are still looking at viable options on how we might be able to approach this issue, but we don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I will be sure to report back to this thread whenever we have new, concrete information to share. If we do develop a firmware version that we think successfully addresses this issue, I will be sure to invite all the D800 users in this thread to test for us. Again though, we cannot say for sure that we will be able to resolve this issue via firmware update, as it appears to be related to the camera's hardware.

Hope to have more information for you soon. Thanks!

I've just bought a pro X2 to use on my D800 and now I'm reading that it is not working properly in Direct Mode. I am curious to know if it is possible to bypass this mode by using my iPhone as a hotspot using the Network sharing option on the iPhone (I live in Canada, we do have this option which is not available on At&t i think. If it does, it solves my problem, if it don't ...I'm in trouble ...

Yannickraw - I tried setting up a hotspot with iPhone and Samsung galaxy, none of it works, a portable MiFi device may be the answer.

I've just received my card this morning and I think I found a way to make it works. I saved my iPhone's hotspot in the settings and as I expected when I tried the iPhone app it did not work. BUT and there is the trick when I plugged my laptop on my iPhone network it kind of activate the phone's network and the Eye-Fi started working like a champ. The downside is that it's not very nice to use your laptop to activate your transfer.
The solution if you have an iPad AND a iPhone is the activate the hotspot feature on the iPhone and to plug the iPad on it to be able to get the active and then transfer the files using the iPhone as a router.
OR
You activate the hotspot on the iPhone and you connect any device (I used my brother's iPhone) on it. It will activate the network and the file will then transfer to the iPhone. Not conveniant but if the develloppers use the iOS app to activate the hotspot and keep it awake, it might be a viable solution for this.

The best solution is to use the iPhone as the router and the iPad running the app.
I did not try on Android but I assume it will work the same
