We need another iPhone application

The current Eye-Fi app for the iPhone is evidently to upload photos taken with the iPhone camera to one's Eye-Fi account. Okay, I can see that this is a good thing. But there is another kind of iPhone/iPod Touch app. Ithat I personally would find a lot more useful. Let's say you're in France for a month, you're not carrying a laptop with you, and you're taking lots of pictures, to the point that you risk maxing out the capacity of your memory card. It would be really nice if you could download the pictures on your card to your iPhone or iPod, then erase the data on your Eye-Fi card and be able to start filling up the card al over againSo what I'd like to see is an app. (or even a separate card product, if that turns out to be necessary) that would allow wireless uploads from the card to an iPhone or iPod Touch.

You are absolutely right. It is a shame that I cannot link to my iPhone so I can save copies of pictures and, if desired, send them to others via 3G. I imagine the problem will remain for awhile though as it cuts too many people out of a possible money making loop. It would make it a lot easire though to manage pictures and additionally provide a safe haven for the files. I realize that Eye-Fi has an application to upload to a safe-haven but you cannot count on being near a supported or subscribed wi-fi area.

I came to the forums just to request this feature, so I definitely support this request. With Twitter and Facebook and Flickr, putting things up immediately is pretty critical - so I end up taking lots of shots with my iPhone. But it really doesn't cut it. I want to take more shots with my good camera, but always have to wait to offload them, even with Eye-Fi.

This becomes even more important since the photo-sharing auto upload only supports one service at a time.

I would LOVE to be able to have photos from my camera upload (sideload?) to my iPhone so I could then use them from there.

This would be a killer app - and I don't mind saying I would pay up to $10 for it through the app store.

If you were in france could you not do that in your hotel when you have WiFi access? I mean transfer the items to your iPhone via WiFi across a router? Or is this not possible to do with the iPhone

If you have an older ipod (video or before). you can use the adapter to copy sd cards to ipod for storage! Unfortunately you can't on ipod touch or iphone!

with today's release of the Eye-Fi Pro, ad-hoc connections from the Eye-Fi card are possible. But, like the iPhone, the Eye-Fi card wants to join an established ad-hoc network (e.g. one created by a laptop), so it's not possible to connect an Eye-Fi card and an iPhone without some intermediate device.

For the record, other smart phone platforms (e.g. WinMo and Symbian) *are* able to establish an ad-hoc network to which the Eye-Fi Pro can connect - see here for an example from one of Eye-Fi's application partners:

Yes, and we iPhone developers would LOVE to have access to an Eye-fi SDK, even a simple one that let an application know when a new photo or video was taken, presuming that the application is running. It would also be nice to have the ability to browse what is on the card -- whatever is easiest to provide. FTP? Anything really.

When one records photos, audio, video, etc. with the iPhone, it becomes tedious to transfer the pictures to a computer beforing transmitting wherever they need to go (consistent with the Eye-fi rationale, right?). Cut the computer out altogether ...

... but the iPhone cameras are limited -- enter Eye-fi. With an SDK (not just accessible from the iPhone but any TCP/IP enabled device), applications on many platforms would pop up and drive the demand for the Eye-fi Pro -- everyone would want/need one.

I recently spent a month in New Zealand (yes, it was great!), but there was no wi fi around for days at times, but surprisingly good phone coverage even in the middle of nowhere. I took my iphone rather than a laptop or netbook, and it was great, except that I couldnt get any of the 1400 photos I took on my digital camera onto the iphone to send in emails, to edit and post to flickr etc, or just to transfer to iphone for safe keeping.

the ability to transfer from an SD card with wifi to an iphone using just adhoc networking would fill this need and fill a big gap in the capabilities of the iphone.

Is the inability to set up adhoc wifi networks between an iphone and anything else a limitation that means this need wont be met? I hope not, and look forward to a new iphone app that can do this.

I want to add my vote for this feature - I bought my card hoping to be able to use the iPhone app to upload pictures from my point-and-shoot camera to social networking sites - the 2mp iphone built-in camera, at least on the 3g, wasn't cutting it quality-wise for me, but the ability to upload to flickr et al from anywhere was! I was thinking that if upgraded to the Pro card, with the ad hoc capability, it might work, but it sounds like that's not the case. I'm only going to pay that kind of money if this feature is available, as it's the missing link for me.

Eye-Fi doesn't have the ability to alter the iPhone to allow it to create ad-hoc networks, Apple robbed us of that feature. If we posted this on Apple's forums then maybe they would listen, but I doubt asking on an Eye-Fi Forum will get Apples attention.

Air Share allows the phone to connect to an Ad-Hoc network, not create it, because the iPhone cannot create an Ad-Hoc network (unless jailbroken and running MiWi)

Can we not use A jailbroken iPhone to serve as a router. Basically use the data plan on the iPhone to creAte a wifi connection using mywi and then get the eye-fi pro card to upload pictures directly to flickr or something?

Has anyone tried that? I had actually called up the eyefi tech support to ask about this and they saidthat this is possible. Also listed the same query in the beginners section

Ok, so here's the low down:
A JAILBROKEN iPhone can run either:
PDAnet - paid verson will allow photos to transfer to the web/Eye-Fi server through the iPhone, but it cannot create an ad-hoc network, you must create one, then join it on the iPhone, and if the phone ever goes to sleep it may notice that the network is not there anymore and leave the network. If it doesn't realise that the network is not there, it will basically broadcast the network and the card will work with it. (the free version only allows HTML traffic so you cannot transfer images unless you get the paid version)

MyWi - allows the phone to create an ad-hoc network with out needing anything else. The card can then transfer using the phones data network to the Eye-Fi Servers and then to your destinations.

You will need a Pro Card and a Jailbroken iPhone for either

I have used both, in my opinion PDAnet is not worth the hassle as it cannot create a network, MyWi works well and the speed is not horrible. I have only really tested both, I have a set up I use when shooting, so I have not field tested them or spent along amount of time using them, but figured I share what I know

Thanks for your input. I'm still waiting for a stable jailbreak for my iOS 4.1... (I'm using iPhone 4.)

I just wonder one thing, when you transfer the photos from Eye-fi to iPhone via 3G, does it use up any 3G data (or minutes).

My data plan only has 1GB of traffic per month, so this will be my biggest concern...

I'm also concerned about the issue you've mention, and I should say that on the whole the speed of Eye-Fi leaves a little to be desired, even now

Since this thread was started, "Direct Mode" for X2 cards has been released so you can transfer from your card right to your iPhone without having to use any other wifi or 3G network (like the initial post suggested). Since this is not using the phone's 3G network, then no it does not use up data. If you then use the phone's 3G network to transfer the photo from the iPhone to your computer or an online sharing site then it will use data, but you could always just wait until the phone can connect to wifi to do that since the images will have been saved on the phone.

And iPhones can also create an infrastructure WiFi network now, so does that mean that older non X2 cards can connect to that iPhone network and upload pictures directly to the iPhone or can they only go to the Eye-Fi servers?
