Any open network.... ?

Postby mxcobra » Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:00 am

I just picked up the eye-fi 4GB card. So far I love it !

I tried searching the forums, but the search keeps coming back with nada...

How can I set the card to find "any" unsecured network. I have added my own networks with the card plugged in to my laptop with the web gui and the SD card plugged in.

I was going to spend the 15 bucks, and upgrade to the "hotspot" plug in... But that is not what im looking for...

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Oddly, adding the hotspot feature *is* the way to get what you want. In addition to adding access to Wayport hotspots, that feature configures the card to access any truly open network (no security, no splash screen, etc.). There's no other way to do so.

Thanks for the info...
Looks like I will belly up and spend the 15 bucks... I kinds thought for the 80 bucks I already spent it would be a true "wifi" SD card... I guess the next time I should do a little more home work.

Dont get me wrong, still a great product. Just a little miss leading out of the box :)

If you know the SSID of networks you expect to encounter you can configure them remotely. Before I got the hotspot service I had configured a lot of generic SSIDs (like "linksys", "netgear" and so on) as well as the SSIDs of public wifi in the airports and town centers I frequent. Worked fine.

Not a bad idea...

But for 15 bucks, it will pick up all open networks.. Might be worth spending the cash :)

Hmm. I have tried to connect to my own network as an "open network" with a new 8gb explore, to no avail. :-( Boo. Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Edit: Just tried to access the hotspot "account" and got denied. Though my first question still stands + this one: Why would there be an option for Open Networks, if its not true. False advertising :-P

I bought a 8GB pro X2+Wi-Fi the only place it would connect is my home wi-fi.So Eye-Fi replaced it, (with a refurbished chip) NOT any better, only place it will work is at home. I live in an area that has AT&T wi-fi hotspots everywhere. Don't waste money upgrading hoping that it is going to work because it won't I have found out by searching that all attwifi hotspots are not the same. Places like McDonalds are owned by different ownerw and all wifis at McDonalds re controlled by heir owners. I didn't buy the product HOPUING it would connect Eye-Fi said that there were thousands of places to connect world wide, bull, it aint going to happen. I am hoping to go another route and connect to my laptop with a ad hoc connection, My laptop has wi-fi and with a network card I will be able to send pictures home. Eye-Fi techs are apparently unable to amnswer question about the log fie iI
