Using Eye-Fi card in motion sensor security cameras?

Postby mister google » Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:18 pm

Do we think Eye-Fi cards will work in motion sensor security cameras?

We are in the market to upgrade our exterior motion sensor lights to motion sensor lights with built-in digital camera. Takes snapshot of anyone or anything that causes the sensor to activate, such as prowlers, delivery persons, or door-to-door salespeople. Two examples I looked at record the image to an SD card, which is nice, but inconvenient. Checking images would require one to remove the card and view it on the computer.

I'm not interested in analog cameras that send wireless signal to a TV.

What are the operating temperatures of the eye-fi card(s)?

Examples of cameras include one sold at Sam's Club (SmartGuard Motion Light w/ Security Camera), and Bushnell's Trail cameras.

thanks,

A couple of things:
1. At the moment Eye-Fi cards commercially available do not support video transfer which is what the Smartguard camera saves (not JPEG images, which is what the Eye-Fi card will transfer). Video is coming, but no word on exactly when.
2. The card does not delete files that have been transferred, so unless the camera overwrites old files once full (which the SmartGuard says it does) the card will eventually fill up and have to be manually removed and files deleted. It's not clear what the Bushnell camera does when the card is full.
3. Depending on the distance from the camera mounting location to the wireless AP, and on the material and configuration of the camera you may not get enough range out of the card. I would definitely try to figure out a way to test this before you invest in a lot of equipment.

There are a couple of people on these forums who have tried somewhat similar arrangements, maybe one of them will share some wisdom.

I have tried the eyefi card in the smartguard camera & it will write to the card in AVI format.
Untill eyefi has enabled video support it is unknown if it will send the videos.
I did try the following tests:

1) powered off my router (WRT54G/DD-WRT)
2) copied a bunch of jpg files to the DCIM folder on the eyefi card
3) incerted the eyefi card into the SmartGuard (http://www.smart-guard.net) motion camera
4) powered on the router & the pictures started to uploaded fast !

I have also been able to replace step #3 by putting the card into my photo frame and also into the card reader on a printer (not connected to a pc) and the photos uploaded just fine.

When video support is enabled, I will post my results.

Did anyone resolve this. I have a Lexar Shoot-n-synce 2G SD card (which I understand is an Eye-fi card but cant figure out which) to fit into one of these security cameras. I got this model as it is SD and SHDC. However I cannto get it to transfer videos

That is the equivalent of an Eye-Fi 2GB "Share" card, which as you've observed does not support video transfer.

Hi

Thanks

So is there no way of at least seeing this on the network and manually downloading?

Sure, I see no problem in downloading manually!

If you want to see clear pictures though you might want to check this thread out;

If you want to deal with the firmware, has some good line code tricks.
