Discussion related to cameras used with your Eye-Fi Card

Go Pro Hero

Postby rman on Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:39 pm

The Eye-Fi Pro card works with the GoPro Hero camera (camera has the 4GB firmware upgrade). I setup an adhoc network and it connects up. I put the camera in it's underwater housing and walked out to my garage, about 20 feet away and it continued to upload to my computer.

However, the problem I'm having is it goes into an infinite loop. It keeps uploading the same images and videos. I read some of the other posts that have a similar looping problem and the suggestion was to create a new local folder. I did that and I still get the infinite upload loop. Any suggestions? I'm only using an adhoc network so it's only uploading locally.

I do find it odd that when using an adhoc network the Eye-Fi Manager doesn't work because it's not connected to the internet. shouldn't there be a local Eye-Fi Manager that can be used for Adhoc networks?

I think I figured out what my issue is. The GoPro Hero does not have a clock in it and assigns a fictitious date to the file, in fact it assigned the exact same date and time to all files. i think this is messing up the Eye-Fi checksums.

No, it never did work right with the HD Hero. I don't remember exactly. It was either the JPGs would transmit and the videos wouldn't, or the other way around. I'll try again after the camera firmware upgrade.

any updates? Did you get it to work? Did GoPro have a fw upgrade to fix the dates issue?

I'm going to wait until after the firmware update. i think they may be adding some metatags that might help the situation.

Okay all your GoPro HD Hero Eye-Fi'ers. I have some great news. The HD Hero works perfectly with the new Eye-Fi Pro 8GB card when you install the firmware for the camera. All the bugs that plagued the GoPro before with the Eye-Fi are gone. And it's FAST. I am working on an in-depth review and how-to for our website http://www.eyeofmine.com/gopro/hd. But here are some highlights:

JPGS and MP4s transfer perfectly. if the network connection is lost, the card will continue where it left of later.

It has an amazing speed of 90MB per minute when using an Adhoc network (direct link between camera and laptop). That's alot of wireless data. What's great about this speed is it's FASTER than real time so you'll never get bogged down transferring files. A 3 GB file takes about 33 minutes to transmit. AND it will continue to transmit files even while taking pictures or videos. We tested a 1 frame every 2 seconds time-lapse and the card transmitting the pictures without hickup.

The card has an incredible range of 90 feet! That is a long ways for something that does not have an antenna.

A couple quirks. Don't know if this is a GoPro issue or Eye-Fi or Adhoc:
The card will NOT transmit a wireless signal until a picture or video is taken. As soon as you do that, it immediately starts transmitting.
It takes forever to have the laptop connect to the card (okay, it's only 1-2 minutes but that's a long time to connect). We found a workaround. Once you setup an adhoc network on your laptop, give it a static IP so it doesn't wait for one being assigned by the card. Then the wireless connection takes only seconds. Do an automatic setup the first time, then write down what IP address was assigned by the card and this becomes the static IP. It worked for us.

I was put off by the 'small' 8GB card size, but am now reading about a feature this particular card has called endless memory mode. It's supposed to let the card overwrite any files that have already been copied by the laptop. How cool is that?! We'll be testing that feature in the near future.

Keep an 'eye' out for my article in the next few weeks: http://www.eyeofmine.com/gopro/hd

Sounds like you are using XP. That is an issue with they way XP handles ad-hoc, any other OS will not have that issue. Also to clarify, the card does not assign IPs.

Yes, I'm using XP. So the laptop decides it's own IP even though the card is doing the transmitting?

Yes because the laptop is what is creating the network. The problem is that in XP the computer will actually wait for something else to give it an IP untill it times out and assigns itself one, that is what causes the delay. That issue is only in XP fortunately, so Vista, 7 and the Mac OS are quicker to connect and start to transfer.

Ahh, great to know. thanks.

I have an update on GoPro HD Hero transfer times. Turns out that 90MB per minute adhoc transfer speed is faster than real time only for some of the resolutions:

1080p = 112MB per minute = 18 mins. for 2GB file
960p = 91mb per minute = 22 mins. for 2GB file
720p 60fps = 115MB per minute = 17 mins. for 2GB file
720P 30fps = 60MB per minute = 33 mins. for 2GB file
480p 60fps = 62mb per minute = 32 mins. for 2GB file

A possible way to shorten the initial connection time via ad-hoc...

If you specify an IP address on your laptop's wireless card, it won't be trying to get an address via DHCP, so you'll actually be waiting for the card to timeout (which happens in only 15 seconds, IIRC). Of course, when you want to re-connect to your home network, or any other wireless network, you'll need to change the setting back to DHCP...

Use these settings in order to allow your computer to talk to the Eye-Fi card:

IP address: 169.254.x.x (where x is any number between 1 and 254)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
A default gateway is not required, nor are any of the other TCP/IP settings.
My cameras: Nikon D90, Panasonic ZS7
My Eye-Fi: 8GB Pro X2

Ahh, so it doesn't need to be a specific IP address for a specific card. Anything with 169.254.xxx.xxx will do. Can you tell I'm wireless challenged? :)

Guys,

Let me make it super simple for all you XP folks. Just use the following app, and it'll solve all your issues :-)

Enjoy. It's an app that they built for us, and we've tested it... Works great.

please note fellow eye-fi + gopro users

my X2 card went into the GO PRO HD, i erased it in camera and since then it has stopped working.
others camera report it as corrupted and in PC it appears as a 32mb unformated FAT drive with no way back.

i contacted eye-fi and they told me im on some double-secret "waiting list".
since your situation is one that we do not officially support we must give priority to customers in supported locations with supported setups first.

so beware, my card is dead :(

Yair r,

The behavior you are describing is certainly a card failure. I would like you RMA your card as soon as possible. I am also going to test the Go Pro HD today to make sure this issue is not reproducible. Lastly, after the RMA process has completed, I will be taking a look at your card with engineering to try to figure out what happened.

I am not quite sure what you mean about this waiting list. Was a ticket created for your support request? If so, what is your ticket number? I would like to expedite the RMA process asap.

I have the Hero 960, and eyefi 4th share and an eyefi 8th Mobile (the newest card that comes with Direct Mode).

When I use the hero with either eyefi, it randomly gives me errors. Either the SoS error for a corrupt video, or it stops shooting video on it's own (1 sec long or a couple minutes, it just stops). Sometimes, the Hero freezes up with the eyefi in it if I take a photo or a video. Also, sometimes i succesfully shoot a video, but it errors on the transfer to my ipad. not knowing why it errors makes it unreliable.

But when it is successful, it works like a charm, which is why I want to trouble shoot this issue.

The Hero never errors with a non eyefi card in it.

Ahynideas?

The exact same scenario just happened to me with my x2 Pro and new GoPro HD HERO. I've got an email into support.

What is your support number? Also, can you provide me with your card log?

1. Insert the Eye-Fi Card into the USB card reader and into your computer
2. Click on the Eye-Fi Helper icon in the Apple Menu Bar or in the Windows Task Bar
3. Select "Get Eye-Fi Card Log..." from the menu. You may have to wait several seconds, but, in a moment, you will be asked where to save the Eye-Fi Card log file
4. Save the Eye-Fi Card.log file to your computer hard drive and reply to this thread or PM me with your log file attached

Can't help with the logs...since the card is unreadable. (I've tried many different readers, o/s and cameras...all just show a 32Mb FAT partition and certainly not seen as an eyefi)

hey guys i bought a eyefi x2 4gb not the pro or the geo tagging one. i want to connect it to an adhoc on my windows 7 starter netbook so i can bring it with me when i go diving. now i've read another post here that its only the pro version that has the adhoc available is that true? also if its not how do i set it up for my card? if it is do you know if eyefi has an upgrade for it? the only reason i bought it is for the camera straight to computer connectivity.

That's correct -- only the Pro X2 supports ad-hoc:

http://www.eye.fi/products/compare-cards

BUT -- just use Eye-Fi Direct. The card will spawn the Wi-Fi connection, and your Windows 7 will connect to the card, as a normal Wi-Fi hotspot (secured) and the magic will continue. Eye-Fi Direct is a free feature on all X2 cards.

http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/features/direct-mode
http://support.eye.fi/mobile-applicatio ... ye-fi-app/

Helps? Eye-Fi Direct has been made for mobile applications, but there is no reason that it shouldn't work with PC's. I personally haven't tried it though, with Windows 7.

If not -- just gift the Connect X2 to a friend (it was only $40, right? :-) ) and purchase the Pro X2. It's been lowered from $150 to $100, and sometimes, on sale, for even less.

Thx --

Ziv.

On the official Eye.fi support center the GoPro Hero HD is list as _NOT_ supported.

Given the posts in the forums where people are using it with a GoPro Hero HD and still getting support, is this still the case?

What are the known issues (if any) that Eye-Fi team are aware of when using a Pro X2 8gb card with a GoPro Hero HD?

Please advise.
Thanks.

Good question. Let me find out. Last I heard -- it worked well, and you just needed to take a photo, to start the GoPro and prevent it from turning off power...
