I completely agree. The internet requirement is absolutely absurd. This forum is littered with complaints, and yet at Eye.fi nobody seems to care. I've read the justifications for it, but there is no reason you cannot provide an opt-out function.

I currently use about 20 cards, and I find the desktop software so unreliable that I've resorted to having my camera workstations reboot 4 times daily via scripting. Even then, cards frequently just stop working, and the only somewhat reliable fix is to remove and re-add my wireless networks. I'd like to have the option to use the python standalone server written by Jeff Tchang, but the mandatory firmware updates that are required to initially configure the card make that almost impossible. Again, there is no reason why there cannot be a standalone configuration app. If you don't feel that there is a need for one, browse these forums or other blog posts on the internet regarding the product. There is also absolutely no reason I should need to register an account unless I wish to take advantage of your premium services.

Frankly, I feel like a prisoner to EyeFi. What happens to my cards should you ever go out of business? This is beyond ridiculous. Sorry to seem seem so negative, but these very same complaints have been made going back to 2008. Are there any plans to remedy these problems? Again, I've already heard the justifications for some of the software behavior, but it doesn't make any sense to lock down your customer's usage ability. At the very minimum I should be able to configure a card without communicating EyeFi servers.

most of what you have requested can be done with the new Eye-Fi Center desktop software.

I tried the EyeFi center and I ran into stability issues. It's good to know that it is completely offline. Are there any sort of best practices that I might not be following? I typically have a single PC managing between 5-10 cards, and periodically, my cards will just stop uploading. The general solution is to re-add a wireless network to the device; everything starts working after that. Any ideas?

jfaraone,

If you are having stability issues with the Eye-Fi Center application, please let us know. If you could PM me log files along with a description of any flakey stability, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sean

PS - log files for Eye-Fi Center should be called Eye-Fi Center.log and should be available at:

Mac: /Users/your_name_here/Library/Preferences/fi.eye.center.*/Local Store/

Windows: C:\Users\username_here\AppData?\Roaming\fi.eye.center.*\Local Store

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username_here\Application Data\fi.eye.center.*\Local Store

depending on your operating system.

If I set up my card using the local manager and everything works, will it still work if I disconnect the router from the internet?

Obviously the uploads to youtwitface won't work, but will it upload to the computer?
