Geotagging data not showing up in Picasa for windows

I can see the Geo data in Eye-Fi center and Picasa Web but not when the files are transferred from Eye-Fi center to my Local Windows 7 Machine and viewed in Picasa for windows. If I download a photo from Picasa Web to Picasa for windows I can see the Geo Data.
This problem does not exist On my Mac - iPhoto sees the Geo data just fine.

Same problem here. When I first installed the card and software everything worked perfect. It would geotag in the eyefi center and write the info to the jpeg file. It would also show up in picasa because it was written to jpeg file (THROUGH PICASA). Now for no reason, it has stopped writing the info to the jpeg file. So the geotag info shows up in eyefi center but is not written to file. When I open up picasa or check properties (THROUGH PICASA) of file, there is no geotag info written to jpeg.

As a coincidence, this all started AFTER I started sharing photos through eyefi center. I disabled the feature, deleted program and reinstalled everything. This did NOT help me. I am at a loss as to fix this. This is a software problem with eyefi center.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I just got off the phone with Eye-Fi tech support. There appears to be a bug with the latest version of Eye-Fi Centre that is causing this issue (personally I prefer it when it's is "them" causing the problem, than when it is "me"). Eye-Fi wonks hard at work on (yet another) fix to the Centre software. Of course there is no ETA for the fix as of yet.

I would hope that in the near term someone at Eye-Fi figures it out and posts that there is a problem, and the ETA when they have one.

Funny... I called Tech Support today too and was told the issue was with Picasa (for windows desktop) and not with the Eye-Fi software or card as all the Geo data was visible when viewing with a 3rd party program.... Let the finger pointing begin....

(Somehow my post to this thread did not quite make it up, but just in case this is a duplicate, my apologies...)

We may be discussing more than one problem on this thread, so please allow me to make a few observations and ask a couple of questions.

sardog - there's no other way to "import" geo-tagging data into iPhoto other than iPhoto itself extracting it out of the EXIF data while importing the JPEG files, so if iPhoto is able to display the geo-tagging information, but Picasa (the desktop application for Windows) is not, the problem *looks* to be with Picasa, but we will certainly investigate. If you can, please download ExifTool from:

http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

and run it on a few of the photos that are displaying geo-tagging data in iPhoto, but not in Picasa and see if the "GPS" information is present in ExifTool's output.

kriemer and keester - there indeed was an issue affecting the writing of geo-tagging data into the EXIF headers of JPEGs from a couple of recent Canon point and shoot camera models and the fix for that was released last week. Are you running the latest version of the Eye-Fi Center (please select "Check for updates..." from the pop-up menu by clicking on the Eye-Fi icon in the system tray on Windows and the Finder menu bar on OS X)? Can you share with us what camera models you are using?

Thanks for the reply. I checked a specific photo's http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5415621/IMG_3516.JPG EXIF data with http://www.opanda.com/en/ (per Eye-Fi tech support instructions) This is the .jpg that my Eye-fi software put on my hard drive.
The photo's geo data is picked up by iPhoto on my mac.... but NOT in Picasa on my PC

Here is the EXIF Geo data from that photo.... It will not geotag in Picasa for windows. So is the problem with Canon, Picasa or Eye-Fi ???

At least as far as a first pass result is concerned, that seems pretty conclusive as far as the EXIF data agreeing with the import into iPhoto. I'll try this with a Windows machine and Picasa at work tomorrow (on an MacBook Pro right now), but would you mind opening a parallel case with Picasa support and forwarding them them the photo, too, to see what they have to say about the fact that two other tools are processing the geo-tagging data correctly while Picasa isn't?

Everything seems to indicate that Picasa (the newest version) seems to be unable to handle the alignment of the MakerNotes (manufacturer proprietary information) section of the EXIF data written by these Canon cameras, like iPhoto and other software can.

If you haven't deleted this IMG_3516.JPG file off of your Eye-Fi Card, could I ask you far a quick favor? Could you just plug the Eye-Fi Card into your computer with the supplied card reader and copy IMG_3516.JPG off of the card via the file explorer in "old school" fashion and make it available for download via Dropbox also? I just want to make sure that the alignment of the MakerNotes section is like that as written by the camera (I'm 99.9% sure it will be because it comes before any of the additional data written by the Eye-Fi Center software).

I have a Canon G9,
and yes the gps data is being written to the jpeg, but picassa can't read it. It is not a picassa version issue I think, because the problem happened while using the same version. I switched to a freeware program Pictomio (excellent program) that reads and maps gps info with no problems and uploads to different web albums. I don't know where the problem is or when it started. Once minute its working, now it's not. Right now I have stopped using picassa and am using Pictomio.
Sorry for the hubbub, but it look like a common problem for many of us.

Thanks for the tip prabha (regarding the EXIF geo data without tools)... Now if we could only get an acknowledgment from the good folks at Google (Picasa) You guys obviously have some "dealings" with them.... Can you get them on the horn and iron this issue out for us?

Can Eye-Fi transfer the Photo and Exif data without compressing anything? like it does when it sends the upload to PicasaWeb? I don't understand why there is a need to "compress" any EXIF or geo data to my Desktop photos. Aside from the file size difference Can you tell me why the PicasaWeb photo's Geo data is more detailed than the photo sent to my computer by Eye-Fi?

there is no intentional compression of the EXIF/IPTC/XMP data. While writing the XMP/IPTC data the EXIF data is rewritten in the original file. And this process may compact the data. And it again depends on how the IFD's are written by the camera. So in some cases the rewrite won't modify anything major and in some case it may. so i don't think this is an issue.

And regarding the more detailed lat/long, i don't have much information on the value returned by our geo provider and i may need to debug to see the values and see how the tags are added. so i'll get back to you later on this issue.

And who added the geo tags for the picassa picture, is that by our servers or picassa web??

Prabha's question is a bit rhetorical. What he's pointing out is that the copy of the photo that's delivered to the desktop has its EXIF data manipulated for geo-tagging using Adobe's XMP library and the libexif library, while the photos that are uploaded to Picasa Web Albums have their EXIF data manipulated by ExifTool, a Perl-based module. Furthermore, if the photos were uploaded to our servers first, then downloaded to the desktop destination, then they arrive already geo-tagged, in which case both copies have their EXIF data manipulated by ExifTool. As your screenshot shows, for example, different libraries can choose different rational fraction representations of non-integer quantities (EXIF does not use floating point, but rather fractional representations), resulting in fleetingly small differences in numeric representations when converted to floating point.

In neither case is any "compression" done and the differences in size are due to the slightly different EXIF processing and alignment implementations of the two independent mechanisms. If you wish, make both copies of the photo downloadable via Dropbox (and even a third copy copied directly off of the Eye-Fi Card's DCIM folder) and I'd be happy to decode the EXIF headers verbosely to make sure there's no loss of metadata.

I really am not sure what mess you are referring to. This really is the nature of rich metadata and, as mentioned on the Google forum thread that you posted on, too, a side-effect of inexact specifications that allow for slightly different representations of the same data to be "correct."

As you can see, other than the obvious differences in the file names and file system timestamps based on when I downloaded the files from Dropbox (as opposed to when the photo was captured, which is a time stamp in the EXIF header and identical in all three copies) and subtle differences in the various "segment" sizes and offsets, the GPS coordinates are decoded ever so slightly differently (per your screenshot) and, in the case of the Picasa Web Albums downloaded photo, the XMP city, state and country tags are repeated twice. Other than that, the metadata is entirely identical.

I hope you are not asking me that question ...Because I don't have a clue.... It was just downloaded to my desktop from picasaweb (not altered in any way by me).

As I described to you in my earlier post, this is not more "detail" but simply a rounding difference in the way the two different EXIF libraries choose to encode a floating point (i.e. 28.148273214) number into a rational fraction of the form N/D (numerator over denominator), which is the form that EXIF encodes such values. A +/- 0.5 difference in the representation of the floating point number represents a linear distance of approximately 25 feet, well within the threshold of accuracy of a WiFi-based positioning system. Neither one is "more correct" than the other one.

No, it has nothing to do with that, as both coordinates are equally valid. I think at this point you have observed far more software packages (including Windows' own built-in information window, etc.) displaying the GPS position and geo-tagging information correctly with both versions of the file, than not (Picasa being the sole holdout), so I'm not sure what more I can do to have you entertain the idea that this may indeed be a bug in Picasa. As I showed to you in the decodings, equally-valid and correct EXIF headers can be formatted slightly differently, and in this case one formatting seems to throw off Picasa, while working correctly in a vast majority of all other geo-tagging-aware software packages.
