Geotagging works on one camera - not on the other

Postby wellmeij » Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:10 pm

So geotagging works fine on my Sony Alpha 100 w/CF adapter (though upload while in camera doesn't - but thats a different issue) but when I switch to my Sanyo CG6 the Geotagging doesn't work no matter what I do, even though I am physically in the same spot, which is within 15 ft of my access point. Any ideas?

Now geotagging isn't working at all

Postby wellmeij » Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:28 pm

Geotagging not working at all now in either camera - I'll give it one more day of testing, but its looking like this is going to get returned to the store.

Is it possible that originally your camera was getting its tagging information from another close-by network that has since been turned off or somehow diminished? My camera still won't tag in my home network but in other areas works fine. Just a thought.

Possibility...have to experiment

Postby wellmeij » Fri Aug 22, 2008 5:02 am

There is a coffee shop within ~100 yards of the back of my house. I will have to experiment to see what the signal from there is doing, though last I paid attention they left it on round the clock. Its just odd, because, though the Eye-Fi card gets geotags while in my Sony Alpha, it will not connect or upload to my home network while in that same camera. If using the Sanyo CG-6 it will connect and upload photos to my home network any time I stop shooting, doesn't matter whether it is handheld or if I sit it down on the table, though the photos are not geotagged. That behavior just seems backwards in my mind...

That is odd behavior... I agree, it seems like if you have one you should have the other. I'm trying to imagine how being in the CF adapter might allow the card to see the coffee shop signal for WPS reasons but somehow not be able to work with your home network? That still doesn't explain why your Sanyo can't see it.

As an aside, have you tried modifying the CF adapter to get better reception? I took the metal plates off of both sides of my adapter in order to get reasonable reception in my Rebel XTi.

Again, just speculating here, but the Sanyo is a camcorder/camera, right? Maybe there's something about the way it records photos to the card that prevents the Eye-Fi from doing the geotagging? I can't imagine why that would be the case - just a shot in the dark.

We're looking into this. I have already suggested that it's a possibility that the way his hand wraps around the Sanyo could be the problem with the geotagging, but he has made me aware that even with his hand wrapped around the camera near his wireless network the photos still upload.

I believe we have one of these in the office, and hopefully we can yield some results with testing it.

wellmeij- the Sony Alpha 100 is very aggressive about turning off the (CF) card slot, even when the camera is seemingly on. This is why you are not able to upload from within that body. It does happen that the card is on long enough as you are taking photos to capture access point information for geotagging.

As others have suggested here, there is likely another access point that is not being picked up within the Sanyo, and it is that other access point that has been previously mapped by skyhook's WPS system.

You can make this better by following the instructions at this link to get your home AP mapped:

http://support.eye.fi/troubleshooting/h ... -my-house/

PS: we don't list the A100 on our incompatibility list, as it only lists SD based cameras, and we haven't comprehensively tested CF models.

I did observe while experimenting with all the cameras I own, if one does not set the cameras not to power off or extended period of time to power off, the upload and geotagging is delayed significantly, especially if you move a distance from one picture to the next.

Skyhooked

Postby wellmeij » Sun Aug 31, 2008 4:56 am

OK - I submitted my home AP data to Skyhook. It says that will take a while (few days...?) to filter out and be available via the partner/public interface.

ykoren - I am not trying to hold EyeFi accountable for the CF adapter functionality with the EyeFi card. I knew that might not work. I am mainly concerned that the card does not achieve full functionality in the Sanyo cam, which is listed as supported on the EyeFi Web site. Thank you for the confirmation that the A100 shuts off the CF controller agressively. I suspected that. Nice to have confirmation, even when its not the news you hoped to hear.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful and helpful replies.

PS - to markteicher - I had indeed set both cameras to maximum time on values. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
